SteamVR and Steam: PC VR store and software
Steam Store vs SteamVR
Steam is where you discover, buy and manage games and other PC software. SteamVR is Valve’s VR platform software. A game being sold on Steam does not, by itself, prove that it supports VR, works with your headset, or uses SteamVR specifically.
Valve’s SteamVR developer FAQ lists three VR launch configurations: Launch SteamVR App, Launch SteamVR Overlay and Launch in Other VR (for example, a game using the Oculus SDK). That is why compatibility should be checked on the game listing and in its PC requirements—not inferred from the Steam or SteamVR name alone.
What to check before buying a PC VR game
- VR support and play mode. Confirm whether the listing advertises VR support and whether VR is required or optional. Check if the game also has a flat-screen mode if that matters to you.
- Headset and controllers. Check the game’s description and discussions for the headset/runtime and controller support you need. Support for one PC headset or runtime does not guarantee identical support on another.
- PC requirements. Compare the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, memory, operating system and storage against your computer. PC VR uses the computer to render the experience.
- Launch software. Install SteamVR when the game requires it; some games use a different VR path. Follow the publisher’s instructions for the headset connection software you use.
- Store listing details. Check the current price, included edition, DLC, early-access status and required third-party accounts before checkout.
Browse Valve’s Steam VR catalog, then open the individual game page for the authoritative system requirements and support details. The catalog and labels can change over time.
Streaming SteamVR to a standalone headset
Steam Link streams compatible Steam VR games from a PC to selected standalone headsets; the PC still runs the game, so this is PC VR rather than a native headset build. Valve’s Steam Link FAQ lists Meta Quest 2, 3 and Pro; PICO 4 Ultra, 4 and Neo 3; and HTC Vive Focus Vision and Vive XR Elite. Its current baseline and recommendations are for Steam Link streaming—not minimum requirements for every SteamVR game:
| Steam Link check | Valve’s current guidance |
|---|---|
| PC software and OS | Run Steam and SteamVR on Windows 10 or newer. |
| Minimum listed GPU | NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or AMD RX 570 or better. RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT are excluded because they lack hardware encoding support. |
| Wireless network | 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 minimum; headset and PC must be on the same network. |
| Supported headset software | Meta headsets: OS v74; PICO: v5.13; HTC: v7.0.999.344. Valve says business headsets are not officially supported. |
| Recommended, not minimum | Intel Core i5-4590 / AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better, 16 GB RAM, and a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router. |
Valve updates its supported models and software versions; confirm the live FAQ before setup. A game’s own PC requirements may be higher than these Steam Link streaming baselines.
Steam refunds
Valve’s published policy generally allows a refund request for a game or software application within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve says you can still submit a request outside those conditions for review, and that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights. There are category-specific exceptions; purchases made outside Steam, such as a third-party key, are not refunded by Valve under this policy. The policy page says it was last updated April 23, 2024, so consult the live policy for current details.
For developers
Valve’s SteamVR developer FAQ directs creators to enroll in Steamworks and prepare a product for Steam distribution. Its setup guidance explains how to choose the VR launch configuration that enables Steam to present or automatically use the appropriate option. The exact developer requirements and fees are subject to change; use the live Steamworks documentation when planning a release.
Questions
Does buying a Steam VR game mean I need SteamVR?
Not always. Valve documents both SteamVR launch options and an “Other VR” option. Follow the product’s stated requirements and launch instructions.
Does SteamVR run the game instead of my PC?
No. SteamVR is PC VR software; a PC still has to run the game unless a specific cloud or remote solution is documented. Streaming to a standalone headset does not make the game a native headset app.
Can I refund a game I tried in VR?
Valve’s general game policy uses a 14-day purchase window and under two hours of playtime, with exceptions. Playtime is counted by Steam, so read the current policy before relying on eligibility.
