How to set up SteamVR
Before you start Informational
Use the headset maker’s current PC requirements as the compatibility source; SteamVR’s own store page is not a substitute for headset-specific requirements. Valve’s Index setup guide recommends its compatibility test and current graphics drivers before installation. Clear a play area where outstretched arms and controllers cannot touch walls, windows, furniture, stairs, people, or pets; Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) for Room Scale, while standing or seated play needs less space.
Choose the connection path before plugging in: use the headset maker’s PC app for a cable or vendor-specific wireless link; use Steam Link only for a supported wireless headset. Valve’s current Steam Link requirements call for Steam and SteamVR on a Windows 10-or-newer PC, a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5-or-better router, and a supported headset/GPU. For Quest Link, Meta requires the Meta Horizon Link PC app, a supported Windows PC, and a data-and-power USB cable; a charging-only cable cannot carry the Link connection. Requirements and menu names are version-sensitive, so use the linked vendor page if your device is not listed.
Install SteamVR on the PC Action
- Install or update the Steam desktop client on the computer and sign in.
- Open Steam’s Store, find SteamVR, and select Install. Keep Steam running when you use VR.
- Install any headset-specific PC software required by the manufacturer, then update the headset, controllers, and graphics driver through the vendor’s supported process. Advice: restarting the PC after updates is a low-risk way to reload those components; it is not a SteamVR requirement.
Connect the headset Action
PC-tethered headset: follow the headset’s official cable and display-output instructions, then power on its controllers and headset. Valve’s Index instructions use DisplayPort to the graphics card, USB 3.0 to the PC, and the supplied power adapter; other headsets use different ports, so do not copy those connections blindly.
Meta Quest: with Meta Horizon Link, Meta’s current steps are to connect a USB 3 cable to a USB 3 port, open Quick controls → Link, choose the computer, and select Launch. For Air Link, enable Use Air Link, select the PC, confirm the matching pairing code, and launch. For wireless Steam Link, Valve requires Steam and SteamVR on a Windows 10-or-newer PC; install the Steam Link app in the Quest store, put headset and PC on the same network, and follow its pairing prompts. This is streaming from the PC, not SteamVR running natively on Quest. Expected result: the headset should enter the PC VR environment and SteamVR should show the connected devices.
Launch SteamVR and run room setup Action
- Start SteamVR from Steam (or use the headset/controller system button where supported).
- Wait until the SteamVR monitor shows the connected devices as ready/green, then follow the on-screen room or play-area instructions. Walk the boundary rather than reaching through furniture, and keep the play area clear. If the monitor does not show the headset or controllers ready, stop here and troubleshoot the connection instead of launching a game.
- Before launching a game, check that the headset image, controllers, tracking, and audio work while you are still in a safe standing or seated position. Stop if you feel unwell, lose tracking, or cannot see the boundary.
Special case: PS VR2
PS VR2 on PS5 is a PlayStation setup, not this PC SteamVR procedure. To use PS VR2 on a Windows PC, Sony says to use the official PS VR2 PC adapter, install Steam, SteamVR, and the PlayStation VR2 App, then follow that app’s setup instructions. The adapter and PC requirements are separate from PS5 use.
If SteamVR does not detect the headset
Diagnosis first, not repair: confirm Steam and SteamVR are running; recheck the vendor app, power, display connection, and USB connection; try a different supported port; and restart the PC and headset. For Steam Link, verify the same network and Valve’s published PC/router requirements. If the computer is below a published requirement, treat that as a compatibility limitation. Do not open the headset, bypass safety features, or factory-reset it as a first troubleshooting step. For a Quest connection overview, see how to connect Quest to a PC.
