How to fix SteamVR tracking problems
1. Identify the failure
Tracking symptom: the controller or world drifts/floats while you stand still, a SteamVR device icon pulses green, or the headset display turns gray. A solid-green status icon means the device is ready. Performance symptom: the view stutters while devices remain ready. Open SteamVR > Developer > Advanced Frame Timing; Valve's documentation separates CPU and GPU timing, so repeated timing spikes point toward performance rather than a Lighthouse visibility fault. Valve's tracking troubleshooting and frame-timing reference support this distinction. Menu names can vary by SteamVR version.
2. Run the safe baseline checks
- Stop the VR app, clear the play area, and restart SteamVR. If the issue remains, restart Windows and rerun Room Setup from the SteamVR status window. Expected result: the virtual floor/orientation is correct and devices return to solid green.
- In SteamVR Status, confirm the headset is connected, controllers are on and charged, and every base station has power. Secure loose headset connections; where shown, use SteamVR > Devices > Restart headset. Do not keep playing while a station is visibly unstable.
- Make sure the headset and controllers can see at least one base station. Remove people, furniture or other obstructions from the line of sight. Do not leave the protective shipping film on a station's front surface.
3. Correct the room and base stations
- Aim the stations toward the play area. Valve's recommended Index arrangement is above head height (at least 2 m / 6.5 ft), angled down 30–45 degrees, in opposite corners and no more than 5 m / 16 ft apart. These are recommendations, not a universal room requirement; a lower station needs a different angle.
- Use a solid, non-vibrating mount. A flashing blue LED means instability/vibration; a flashing red LED means an error; no LED means no power. For no LED, test the outlet with the other station or a known-good outlet. If red persists or power is confirmed but the station stays off, stop hardware troubleshooting and contact Steam Support.
- Cover or remove nearby mirrors, windows, televisions and other reflective surfaces, then rerun Room Setup. If tracking improves, uncover one surface at a time to identify the environmental cause.
- Change channels only when SteamVR reports a base-station channel conflict: open the SteamVR status window and choose Devices > Base Station Settings > Configure Base Station Channels, then try Automatic Configuration. Do not change channels as a general-purpose fix.
4. If the room checks do not fix it
- In Steam Library, open SteamVR Properties > Local Files and choose Verify Integrity of Tool Files. Update the graphics driver, restart SteamVR, rerun Room Setup, and retest the same scene.
- Temporarily test SteamVR safe mode on Windows by entering
vrmonitor://safemode/enablein Run. Safe mode prevents some third-party drivers/components from loading. If tracking works only there, exit safe mode and re-enable VR utilities one at a time; this is a diagnostic, not a permanent fix. - If all devices are solid green but the frame graph spikes, stop reducing tracking-related settings and follow the site's SteamVR performance guide instead. Tracking fixes cannot repair a CPU/GPU bottleneck.
Safety and compatibility: keep the boundary and play area clear. Do not open hardware, defeat safety features, or perform a destructive reset for a tracking symptom. Valve says 1.0 and 2.0 base stations cannot be mixed; 2.0 stations do not work with the original Vive headset or Wand controllers. Exact menus, LEDs and supported devices vary by headset/base-station generation, so treat older HTC Vive-specific advice as version-sensitive.
When to contact Valve
If a station remains red, will not power on from a known-good outlet, or tracking still fails after the ordered checks, use Steam Support for VR hardware. Create a SteamVR system report from Settings > General > Create System Report and save it for the request. Include which device icon pulsed, the LED state, and which room/compatibility checks changed the result.
