Unplugged: Air Guitar
How the air-guitar play works
The Meta Quest Store listing describes a simple sequence: pick up a virtual guitar, choose a song, form the indicated chords with your fingers, strum at the right time and respond to the crowd. It presents Steel Panther guitarist Satchel as a mentor and describes a career-style progression in which songs, venues and gear can be unlocked. The store page lists more than 50 rock hits, four difficulty levels, practice mode and leaderboards. Those are specific content markers to check against the exact edition you plan to use.
The central distinction is control method. Meta’s current listing says Unplugged is playable with either controllers or hand tracking, and its platform details list both hands and controllers. The hands-only approach is part of the game’s air-guitar premise, but it is not the only control option on Quest. If you prefer physical controllers or want to try hand tracking, confirm the current control choices in Meta’s listing before buying; do not assume the PC version offers the same hands-free implementation.
Song progression and practice
Meta describes a rock journey spanning five decades, with songs, venues and gear to unlock as you progress. The official listing also calls out four difficulty levels and a practice mode, which gives players a way to work on timing and chord changes outside the performance sequence. It names bands including The Offspring, Weezer and Ozzy Osbourne. Song packs such as the Riff Pack and Pantera Pack are listed separately as add-ons, so check whether a track you want is part of the base listing or paid downloadable content.
This page does not evaluate how accurately the tracking feels or how difficult a song is in practice. It reports the control methods and content that the developer/store publishes, and leaves subjective experience to player testing and reviews.
Where Unplugged runs
- Native Meta Quest: Meta lists Quest, Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S as supported platforms. It identifies the app as a Quest game, lists hands and controllers, and says an internet connection is not required. A PC is not needed to run this Quest installation.
- PCVR through Steam: Steam marks Unplugged as “VR Only” and lists SteamVR or OpenXR. Its system requirements specify a compatible headset and Valve Index controllers for finger tracking. This is the PC edition: the computer runs the app, and it is not the standalone Quest installation.
- PS5 + PlayStation VR2: The official PlayStation Store lists the PS5 product and requires a PS VR2 headset and Sense controllers. It lists sitting, standing and roomscale play styles. This is console VR, distinct from the Quest-native app and Steam PCVR version.
Which control and platform should you choose?
If hands-free air guitar is the feature you care about, look at the Quest store listing and its current supported-device and hand-tracking details. If you prefer a PC-based VR library, read Steam’s controller requirement carefully: the listing ties finger tracking to Valve Index controllers, so owning a different headset alone does not establish that the same control method will work. The PS5 edition is another separately listed console product with its own headset and controller requirements. The official sources cited here do not confirm cross-buy, cross-save or shared DLC entitlements.
Platform and content details are drawn from official Meta, Steam and publisher pages checked October 11, 2026. No compatibility beyond those listings or performance result is implied.
