Ultrawings in VR
Which Ultrawings is this?
This page covers the original Ultrawings (Steam app 639130), developed and published by Bit Planet Games, not Ultrawings 2. Steam describes the original as an aerial-themed, open-world flight game in which you pilot several aircraft and complete missions across an island-themed world.[1] Bit Planet's official games page also distinguishes Ultrawings from its sequel: the sequel adds combat, rotary aircraft and a larger world, so those features should not be attributed to the original.[2]
VR edition and platform scope
The documented edition is the Steam PC version. Steam labels it VR Only, specifies SteamVR under system requirements, and lists tracked-controller support.[1] In practical terms, the game runs on a Windows PC through SteamVR. A Quest connected by Meta Link, Air Link, Steam Link or another streaming method would still be running the PC edition; it would not turn this Steam purchase into a native Quest app.
The official pages checked do not provide an accessible current Meta Quest product page or a verified PlayStation Store listing for the original game. Therefore this guide does not claim a standalone Quest, PSVR or PSVR2 edition. If you want to play without a PC, verify a current first-party store listing for your exact headset before buying; the evidence here supports only the Steam PC route.
Official access and setup path
- Buy or install Ultrawings app 639130 on Steam. Check that the store page says Ultrawings, not Ultrawings 2.[1]
- Prepare a Windows PC that meets at least the published minimum requirements below.
- Install and start SteamVR, then connect the headset using the PC VR method supported by that headset. SteamVR is the runtime named by the game's listing.[1]
- Choose an input method. The store page documents gamepad, HOTAS, rudder pedals and tracked motion controllers, including HTC Vive Wands, Oculus Touch and Windows Mixed Reality controllers.[1]
There is one important PC-streaming pitfall: the developer's Steam description says the game does not support Virtual Desktop because of how it detects head-mounted displays and joysticks.[1] That is not a general statement about every wireless PC VR method, but it does mean Virtual Desktop should not be treated as an officially supported setup for this title.
Aircraft, controls and progression
Ultrawings is built around hands-on cockpit interaction. Steam says you can pilot four distinct aircraft using virtual hands, or use a HOTAS or gamepad instead.[1] With motion controllers, the documented concept is to interact with each aircraft's flight instruments; this is different from a game that merely places a conventional flat gamepad interface in VR.
The game has a progression loop rather than only free flight. Steam lists four stylized islands and says you earn money to buy new airports, which unlock new mission types, and new aircraft.[1] Mission variety includes popping balloons, taking photographs, racing, spot landings and flying through score rings. The same listing describes single-player play, Steam Achievements and English voice-overs. These details make the original a good fit for someone wanting structured arcade-leaning flight activities rather than a documented military-combat simulator.
Officially supported HOTAS models
If you prefer a physical stick, the developer's Steam listing names these officially supported models: Saitek X52, X55 and X56; Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog, HOTASX and HOTAS4; and Thrustmaster T16000M.[1] It explicitly warns that an unlisted joystick will not work with the game. That is unusually useful buying guidance: do not assume generic HOTAS compatibility merely because the product is a flight game. Gamepad and tracked controllers remain documented alternatives.
Published PC requirements
| Requirement | Steam minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 7 |
| Processor | Intel i3-6100 or equivalent |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 960 or equivalent |
| DirectX | Version 11 |
| Storage | 3 GB available space |
| VR runtime | SteamVR |
These are the numbers published on Steam, not a VRHow performance recommendation. The listing's Windows 7 entry is legacy information; Steam separately notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024.[1] No separate headset-by-headset resolution target, recommended VR GPU, comfort setting list or accessibility menu is documented on the official pages checked. VRHow has not independently tested performance, compatibility, tracking or image quality.
Buying and choice guidance
- Choose the Steam edition if you have a Windows PC, SteamVR-capable PC VR setup and want the officially documented four-aircraft, four-island progression game.
- Choose motion controllers for the defining virtual-hand cockpit interaction, or use a gamepad. Choose a named HOTAS only if your model appears in the official support list.
- Do not buy on the assumption of standalone VR. The sources checked verify the Steam PC/SteamVR edition but do not verify a current native Quest or PlayStation edition.
- Do not assume Virtual Desktop works. The developer specifically excludes it in the Steam listing; use the official store/runtime information and your headset maker's current PC VR instructions when selecting a connection method.
