Thumper

Quick take: Thumper is a high-speed rhythm-action game that its developer calls “rhythm violence.” You guide a space beetle through a hostile track, hitting cues, navigating turns and barriers, jumping, and confronting bosses. It has distinct native Quest, PCVR, PS4/PSVR and PS5/PSVR2 options; the exact headset requirement depends on the edition. This is an official-source guide, not a hands-on review. What does “rhythm violence” mean?

Drool’s official game page places a space beetle in a hellish void, racing toward a maniacal giant head. The Steam description adds that the beetle crashes through obstacles, learns new moves and faces boss battles while each impact is woven into an original soundtrack by Brian Gibson of Lightning Bolt. The developers describe the presentation as fast, forceful rhythm-action rather than a conventional dance routine or a music library built around licensed songs.

The official Thumper instruction manual shows how the timing works: thump white pads, hold through turns and slide through red bars, jump into blue rings, and use an in-air pound for a shockwave. Later sections add lane changes and laser hazards, while boss encounters ask the player to repeat patterns until the boss is defeated. The game is divided into nine levels, with score and sub-level ranks rewarding accuracy, clean turns and avoiding damage. The Steam store summarizes the controls as one stick and one button and strongly recommends a traditional controller; the manual says the basic rules are taught through in-game tutorials.

That structure makes the title’s rhythm feel tied to movement along the track: a cue is not just a note to hit but part of a sequence of turns, barriers and jumps. Players who want a repeatable skill challenge can also find a Play+ mode in the official manual; it becomes available after Level 3 and replays the nine levels with stricter rules. These are features stated by the developer, not a claim about how difficult or comfortable the game will feel to an individual player.

Choosing a version

For headset-only play, verify that you are viewing the Meta Quest app and that your headset appears in Meta’s supported-device list. For Steam, confirm the PC requirements and controller recommendation on Steam’s live listing. If you use PlayStation, distinguish the PS4 edition’s PSVR mode from the newer PS5 edition’s optional PS VR2 mode; the PlayStation listing groups the PS4 and PS5 products, but the VR hardware path is not interchangeable. The official sources cited here do not establish cross-buy or shared saves across storefronts.

A traditional controller is worth checking before setting up the PC edition: Steam explicitly recommends one, even though the game is experienced in VR. Meta labels its Quest version “Moderate” comfort and lists sitting play; PlayStation lists sitting for PS VR2. Those are store-provided labels and play styles, not a guarantee that the fast-moving visuals will suit everyone.
