The Room VR: A Dark Matter

Short answer: this is a VR-only puzzle adventure. You can play it natively on Meta Quest, on PlayStation VR/PS VR2, or as PC VR through SteamVR or Oculus PC. It is not a flat-screen or mobile game. Last checked October 11, 2026.

What kind of VR game is it?

Fireproof Games describes The Room VR: A Dark Matter as a chapter in its puzzle series, designed from the ground up for VR. The story starts at the British Institute of Archaeology in London in 1908, after an Egyptologist disappears. You investigate cryptic locations, pick up and examine lifelike objects, and operate strange mechanisms as the mystery moves between reality and an otherworldly space. These are the developer's own game features, rather than a generic VR label: its page specifically calls out multiple locations, interactive gadgets, spatial 3D audio, and movement tuned for comfort. Choose the right edition

EditionWhat it confirmsWhat you need
Meta QuestNative standalone Quest app; single-user, sitting or standingQuest headset and controllers; 2.32 GB listed space
SteamPC VR; Steam lists VR Only and SteamVR or Oculus PC supportWindows PC meeting the published requirements plus a compatible PC VR headset
PlayStationOne purchase provides digital PS VR and PS VR2 versionsPS4 + PS VR + PS Camera, or PS5 + PS VR2 + Sense controllers

The Meta listing currently names Meta Quest, Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S as supported platforms. It also says the app supports sitting and standing and does not require an internet connection. That is a native Quest installation, not Quest PC streaming. Meta Quest store listing

For PC VR, Steam identifies the game as VR Only and lists SteamVR or Oculus PC support. Fireproof's compatibility page names Oculus Rift, Rift S, Valve Index, Vive Cosmos, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets alongside Quest and PlayStation VR. A Quest owner can therefore use the Steam/Oculus PC edition only by connecting the headset to a capable PC through a supported PC-VR route; buying the PC edition does not turn it into a native Quest app. Steam store listing Fireproof compatibility information

On PlayStation, the official store separates the requirements clearly. The PS4 version requires a PS VR headset and PlayStation Camera. The PS5 version requires PS VR2 and PS VR2 Sense controllers, and the store labels it room-scale with a 2 m × 2 m (6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in) play area. Existing PS VR owners are entitled to the PS VR2 digital version at no extra cost; disc owners must keep the PS4 disc in the PS5, and a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use that disc-based upgrade path. Official PC requirements

If you choose Steam, the published minimum is a 64-bit processor and operating system, Windows 10, an Intel i3-6100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200/FX4350 or greater, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 470 or greater, and 4 GB available storage. Steam lists SteamVR or Oculus PC for VR support. Its recommended tier raises the processor to an Intel i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or greater and the graphics card to an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 or greater; memory and storage remain 8 GB and 4 GB. These are the publisher's store requirements, not a guarantee of performance on every headset or connection. Steam system requirements

Setup and comfort details

On Quest, install the Meta store version, put on the headset, and launch it from your library. Meta identifies the game as single-user and lists controllers as the supported input. Fireproof also confirms that its Oculus Link Headset Cable is compatible and that cross-buy is supported between Meta Quest and Oculus Rift, but cross-buy is not the same as cross-platform multiplayer: the game is presented as a single-user experience. On PC, install the Steam edition and start it through SteamVR or Oculus PC after your headset connection is working. Steam lists tracked-controller support, and Fireproof's help page provides PC troubleshooting steps such as verifying the download and updating drivers. VRHow has not independently tested performance, tracking, or wireless streaming on any headset, so treat the official requirements as a starting point rather than a performance promise.

PlayStation owners should set the required PS VR2 play area before starting. Fireproof says the PS VR2 room-scale label does not prevent sitting or standing play: after setting the play area, either option remains available, and the developer recommends manually setting a 2 m × 2 m area. On PS4, the developer says either a PlayStation Move motion controller or a DUALSHOCK 4 can be used. Fireproof's PlayStation help

Hints, saves and known pitfalls

If a puzzle stalls you, Fireproof says the in-game hints are in tabs at the bottom of the inventory. If those tabs are missing, check that hints are enabled in Options. The game generally saves after each completed puzzle. The developer's help page also documents a possible slider-puzzle state in the British Institute and a Chapel teleport problem; the prescribed recovery is to restart the chapter for the slider issue, or return to the main menu and choose Continue Game for the Chapel issue. These are useful edition-owner troubleshooting paths, not claims that every current installation still has the bugs.
