The Climb

At a glance: The Climb is Crytek's VR rock-climbing game. Official listings identify both a standalone Meta Quest edition and a separate PCVR listing for Oculus Rift hardware. Last checked October 11, 2026.

What is The Climb?

Crytek describes The Climb as a virtual-reality game about the excitement and thrill of rock climbing. Its official description has players scaling heights, exploring environments, and using climbing routes, caves and shortcuts. [1] Crytek's Quest announcement further describes free-solo rock climbing, three locations, Tourist mode, bouldering routes, asynchronous competition and leaderboards. [2]

The Meta Quest store categorizes the game as Action and Adventure; the separate Rift listing categorizes it as Action, Arcade and Exploration. [3][4] Crytek is identified as both developer and publisher in the official Meta listings. [3][4]

VR editions and delivery mode

EditionWhat the official source identifies
Standalone Meta QuestThe Meta Quest store listing identifies a Meta Quest edition and lists supported platforms as Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest. [3] Crytek describes this edition as wireless Oculus Quest play. [2]
PCVRThe separate Meta PCVR listing identifies the Rift edition and lists supported platforms as Rift S and Rift. It lists an Intel i5-4590-or-greater processor, NVIDIA GTX 970 graphics card and 7.45 GB memory as recommended PC specifications. [4]

These are distinct official listings: the Quest listing is the standalone Meta Quest edition, while the PCVR listing is for Rift hardware. This page does not infer compatibility with any headset or platform not named by those sources.

Routes, practice and replay

Crytek's Quest announcement gives the original game a concrete structure: three locations—the Alps, Bay and Canyon—plus a tutorial, a practice wall and six bouldering routes. Tourist mode simplifies the climbing mechanics so a player can explore scenery more slowly. That separation makes the game approachable as either a route challenge or a virtual climbing tour, depending on the mode selected. [2]

Progress is tied to learning how to climb efficiently. The official description highlights grip types, stamina, shortcuts and timed climbs; asynchronously, players can compare their ascents with friends on leaderboards. Crytek also lists achievements and cosmetic rewards such as gloves, watches and wristbands. These are replay incentives attached to routes, not an unsupported promise about competitive matchmaking or live multiplayer. [2]

Two distinct editions are documented: a wireless standalone Quest version and a PCVR Rift listing. Crytek's 2019 article said the Quest release supported cross-buy at that time, but purchase entitlements can change, so verify the current store before assuming that a prior purchase includes another edition. The Rift listing is the computer-run version; the Quest store is the native headset build. [2][3][4]

The Quest listing provides practical play details beyond the PCVR specification: it identifies the standalone Quest store edition and its supported Quest family, while the Meta Rift listing is the separate PCVR route. The Quest page lists single-user play and sitting and standing modes, and says an internet connection is not required. Those facts can help distinguish a self-contained climb from PC-streamed play; they do not mean the Rift purchase is included with a Quest purchase today. [3][4]
