Star Wars: Squadrons
What the game is
EA describes Star Wars: Squadrons as a shooter and a first-person starfighter experience with a single-player campaign and multiplayer space dogfights.[1] The official StarWars.com announcement places the story after Return of the Jedi, with pilots serving the New Republic or Galactic Empire, and identifies 5v5 multiplayer dogfights and Fleet Battles.[2]
Official VR delivery modes
| Edition or mode | What the official sources say |
|---|---|
| PCVR | The first-party announcement says the game is playable via VR on PC and entirely in virtual reality. EA's PC settings guide documents a Toggle VR option between a traditional display and VR, with a VR headset required.[2] [3] |
| PlayStation VR | The PlayStation product page identifies the PS4 edition as “PS VR headset enabled” and says the entirety of the game can be played in VR on PSVR. PlayStation says PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera are required for those features.[4] |
| Standalone headset | No native standalone-headset edition is identified by the reviewed official sources. Do not treat the PCVR mode as standalone software. |
Platforms identified by first-party pages
EA lists EA app, Steam, Epic Games, PC, PlayStation and Xbox One on its game page.[1] The PlayStation listing specifically identifies the game as a PS4 release dated October 2, 2020.[4] The VR claims above are limited to the PC and PS4/PSVR modes explicitly named by the first-party sources.
Campaign and multiplayer are different kinds of flying
The single-player campaign alternates between pilots serving the New Republic's Vanguard Squadron and the Empire's Titan Squadron after the Battle of Endor. That two-sided structure provides the story context for the game's first-person cockpits and lets the player see the conflict from both factions, rather than following only one pilot. StarWars.com describes a briefing-room element alongside flying missions and appearances by familiar characters. [2]
Multiplayer is built around teamwork rather than simply scoring solo kills. Dogfights put two five-player squadrons against one another, while Fleet Battles ask teams to complete objectives and destroy the opposing flagship. EA describes choosing ship components and squadron tactics; progression unlocks components and cosmetics through play. These modes therefore have different goals: Dogfight is a direct team-versus-team battle, while Fleet Battles are objective-based and culminate in attacking a capital ship. [1][2]
VR is an optional way to experience the same game, not a separate native headset edition. EA documents a PC Toggle VR setting, and PlayStation says the PS4 game can be played entirely in PS VR with a PlayStation Camera. The PC version therefore requires a computer and headset, while the console VR route is tied to the PS4 version and PlayStation VR hardware. Neither official source identifies standalone Quest software. [3][4]
