Rec Room

A historical overview and official shutdown guidance for Rec Room, the social, creator-made game platform.

Last checked October 11, 2026.

Current status: Rec Room announced that its service would close on June 1, 2026 at noon Pacific. Its notice says players can no longer log in or play after that date, Rec.net goes offline, and online services related to Rec Room Studio end. This is a historical page, not a guide to a currently playable game. Official shutdown announcement.

What Rec Room was

The former Steam listing described Rec Room as a place to chat, hang out, visit player-created rooms, and make and share experiences. It also described avatar customization and the Maker Pen, a building tool for creating objects and worlds. These are useful records of the product's creator and social features, not evidence of a live service today. Official Steam listing.

What the shutdown means for access

Creator data and old rooms

Rec Room said creators could not download a working copy of a room because it depended on the company's servers. Instead, it provided downloads of underlying room and invention data for possible recreation elsewhere. The announcement said those downloads were available only through the Steam PC build and only until June 1, 2026. The company later explained that its export tools could provide data files, not an operational copy of a room. Because that stated download window has passed, this page does not imply that exports can still be started or recovered now. Shutdown and data notice · Creator-data export instructions.

The shutdown notice also outlined player exports for photos and a final avatar report card. It does not establish that those online download routes remain accessible after Rec.net went offline, so check the official support pages before assuming an old export link still works.
