Project Wingman VR: which edition should you buy?
There are two different VR paths
| Edition | VR platform | What is in VR |
|---|---|---|
| Project Wingman (PC) | SteamVR, OpenXR, or Oculus PC | The PC game, including its single-player campaign and Conquest mode |
| Frontline 59 (PS5) | PlayStation VR2 optional | Six new VR missions, alongside the PS5 game and its non-VR content |
Those descriptions come from the official Steam listing and PlayStation Store listing, rather than from community mods or reviews. Both are single-player experiences. The original PC listing describes varied combat missions, more than 20 aircraft, more than 40 weapons, and a customizable Conquest mode with territory capture, bosses, and escalating waves. Steam's official listing also explicitly labels the game “VR Supported.”
PC VR: what you need
Steam's published requirements identify three supported VR runtimes: SteamVR, OpenXR, and Oculus PC. That means a Quest headset can be used only as a PC VR headset through a supported PC connection method; the listing does not describe a native Quest installation. You still need a VR-capable Windows PC, the game installed on Steam, and a headset runtime that can start the PC title. If you use Quest Link, Air Link, or Steam Link, those are ways to stream PC VR—they do not turn Project Wingman into a standalone Quest app.
The official minimum specification is a 64-bit Windows 7/8/10 system, Intel i5-2300 or AMD FX-6350 equivalent, 4 GB RAM, GTX 660 Ti or R9 270 equivalent graphics, DirectX 11, and 20 GB of storage. Steam lists an Intel i7-8600K equivalent, 8 GB RAM, and GTX 1070 Ti equivalent as recommended. Steam also notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024, so treat the older OS wording as the game's published requirement, not a promise that an old Windows installation is a current Steam setup. Check the complete Steam requirements before buying.
Controls and cockpit setup
This is a seated flight game, not a motion-controller flight simulator. Steam's VR requirements say a keyboard or gamepad is required and there are no motion controls. The same official listing says controls are fully rebindable and that HOTAS peripherals work through DirectInput, with custom axis curves. In practical terms, plan around a gamepad, keyboard, or compatible DirectInput HOTAS; do not buy it expecting hand-tracked or motion-controller cockpit interaction.
The PC game is designed as fast-paced combat flight action rather than a strict simulator. Its documented modes include the story campaign and Conquest, where you buy aircraft, build a mercenary force, and adjust modifiers for a different run. VR puts the pilot in the cockpit for head-swiveling combat, but the official requirements do not promise a particular headset model, wireless method, or performance level. VRHow has not independently tested performance or compatibility.
PS5 and PS VR2: understand Frontline 59
Project Wingman: Frontline 59 is a PS5 game with PlayStation VR2 optional, not a native Quest or PCVR edition. The official PlayStation Store describes six all-new VR missions and says the rest of the PS5 game can be played without a headset. Those missions are estimated by the store at two to three hours of new gameplay. The store also documents sitting and roomscale play styles, headset vibration, PS VR2 eye tracking for switching targets, and DualSense vibration and trigger effects.
The VR scope matters when choosing the platform: Frontline 59 gives you a focused set of VR missions rather than making the whole original campaign VR. It is also playable on PS5 without PS VR2, so the headset is optional for the product but required for its VR features. For roomscale play, PlayStation states that a minimum 2 m × 2 m play area is required. Its accessibility information lists subtitles for the main story and main characters, volume controls, basic controller remapping, stick sensitivity and inversion options, practice mode, and the ability to play without motion controls or vibration. See PlayStation's current feature and accessibility details.
Buying and install guidance
- Choose PC if you want the broadest documented VR scope: the original campaign and Conquest on a PC, with SteamVR, OpenXR, or Oculus PC.
- Choose PS5/PS VR2 if you want console setup and PS VR2-specific features, accepting that only six Frontline 59 missions are built for VR.
- On Steam, install the base game first. The official Frontline-59 Campaign DLC page says the add-on requires the base Project Wingman game and lists the same PC VR runtimes, keyboard/gamepad requirement, and no-motion-controls limitation.
- Before purchase, compare your PC against Steam's exact minimum and recommended specifications. Do not infer wireless Quest support, headset-model compatibility, frame-rate performance, or HOTAS behavior beyond what the official listings state.
