Phasmophobia

Quick take: Phasmophobia is a cooperative ghost-investigation game in which players collect evidence inside haunted locations. Official sources verify a PC VR version on Steam and a PS5 version with optional PS VR2 support; this guide does not verify a native standalone Quest app. It is a research guide, not a hands-on review. The investigation loop

The publisher, Kinetic Games, describes the premise as a team of paranormal investigators entering haunted locations and using ghost-hunting equipment to gather evidence before they become the target. The official Steam and PlayStation descriptions name tools such as EMF readers, Spirit Boxes, thermometers and night-vision cameras. The practical objective is not simply to clear enemies: the group observes clues and uses them to identify the ghost type.

That structure gives a new player a useful way to think about each contract: bring tools, inspect the location, record evidence and communicate findings. Steam describes more than 20 ghost types with different traits, as well as cursed possessions that can reveal information or grant abilities in exchange for sanity. These numbers and feature descriptions are what the store listing says at the time checked; they can change with updates.

Solo, co-op, and communicating

The game is built around online investigation with up to four players, but Steam lists both single-player and online co-op. Kinetic Games also says players can face an investigation alone or team up across platforms. That makes the official descriptions useful for choosing a play style: co-op lets a group divide searching and equipment use, while solo is explicitly listed rather than inferred from a lack of other players.

Steam describes voice recognition as a way to interact with ghosts through Ouija Boards and Spirit Box sessions. Its listing also describes custom difficulty, five default difficulties and weekly challenges, while the PlayStation Store mentions daily and weekly challenges. Those details should be read as platform-specific store copy rather than a guarantee that challenge schedules or every feature are identical across editions. The publisher and Steam both describe cross-platform play; confirm the current online and account requirements for your chosen platform before arranging a group session.

Accessibility and setup details to check

The PlayStation Store listing reports volume controls, mono audio, 3D audio, basic controller remapping, adjustable stick sensitivity and a practice mode. Treat those as features listed for the PS5 version, not as a promise of exact parity on Steam. PlayStation also notes that VR games may cause motion sickness and specifies a 2 m × 2 m play area for roomscale PS VR2 games. If you plan to play seated, standing or roomscale, use the mode and room guidance shown for your particular headset and platform.

Before buying, make two separate checks: first, whether you need a PC copy or the PS5 edition; second, whether the headset and controllers required for the VR mode are already part of your setup. For an online group, check subscription and online-play conditions as well—PlayStation’s listing specifies PS Plus for online play, while the Steam and publisher pages describe online co-op and cross-platform play.

Platform availability and in-game features may change. This page reports the official publisher and store information checked on October 11, 2026 and makes no performance or review-score claims.
