Minecraft VR: which edition and platform?
The important distinction: “Minecraft VR” is not one product
Minecraft VR depends on the edition and headset platform. The clearest current official record is Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.40 changelog. Its VR/MR notice says support ended, that the final VR/MR update arrived after March 2025, and that later updates continue on a monitor without a VR/MR device. It also says Marketplace purchases and Minecoins remain available on a non-VR/MR graphics device. In practical terms, do not treat a current Bedrock install as an officially supported VR game just because an older headset once worked.
What the official editions supported
| Edition or path | Officially documented VR scope | What to know now |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock on PlayStation 4 + PlayStation VR | Free patch for the main PlayStation game; PlayStation Camera and PSVR required. | Historical support. The later Bedrock notice ends VR/MR support for current updates. |
| Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Beta on Oculus Rift | Rift version with first-person immersive mode and theater view; cross-play was documented with Gear VR, iOS, Android and Windows 10. | Historical Rift/Oculus Store announcement, not a current Quest-native listing. |
| Minecraft: Gear VR Edition | Mobile VR edition based on Pocket Edition features, including Creative, Survival, skins and multiplayer; a gamepad was required. | Legacy Gear VR path, not a Quest app. |
PlayStation VR: the most detailed official VR feature set
Mojang’s PlayStation VR announcement describes two modes. Immersive places you inside the world in a first-person view. Living Room places the game on a giant virtual TV in a Minecraft living room, a more comfortable, screen-like presentation. The same article says the patch was free for people who already owned Minecraft on PlayStation, and that PlayStation Camera and PlayStation VR were required.
The article also documents comfort settings and recommends shorter sessions and stopping if you feel woozy. That is useful game-specific guidance: begin with Living Room or shorter Immersive sessions rather than assuming every player tolerates the same movement. The developers described the VR version as the Bedrock Minecraft experience on PS4 in 3D, so this was not a separate survival game with a reduced feature set.
Rift and Gear VR: PCVR and mobile VR were separate paths
Meta’s official Rift announcement identifies the game as Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Beta on Rift. It described a download through the Oculus Store, an in-game upgrade to the full version, or a free update for existing Windows 10 Edition Beta owners. It also documented an immersive first-person mode and a theater view, plus Realms and cross-platform play at the time.
That is PCVR: Rift was connected to a Windows PC. It is not the same as a native standalone Quest app, and streaming a PC version to Quest would still be PCVR rather than a native Quest edition. Separately, Meta’s Gear VR announcement called its release Minecraft: Gear VR Edition. It listed Creative and Survival modes, skins and multiplayer, and said a gamepad was needed for movement and interaction. Those historical announcements do not establish current availability on modern Quest headsets.
Should you buy or install it for VR?
- Do not buy a Quest expecting an official Minecraft app. The official sources checked here document Gear VR and Rift-era Oculus releases, not a current native Quest release.
- Do not assume current Bedrock updates will remain VR-compatible. Mojang explicitly says VR/MR devices are no longer supported in the latest updates after the final update period in March 2025.
- If you already own a supported legacy setup, check the exact edition first. PlayStation VR, Rift and Gear VR had different access paths, hardware and controls. A title or account on one platform does not prove entitlement on another.
- Keep a non-VR fallback in mind. Mojang says worlds, Marketplace purchases and Minecoins remain available on a monitor after VR/MR support ends. For current play, use the platform’s supported non-VR Minecraft release rather than relying on an undocumented workaround.
VRHow has not independently tested Minecraft performance, compatibility or legacy storefront availability. The official record is edition-specific and historical; current store visibility, headset support and any community-made Java/PCVR solutions are not verified here.
Questions
Is Minecraft available natively on Meta Quest?
Not according to the official sources checked for this page. Meta’s official VR announcements cover Gear VR and Rift-era releases. Mojang’s current Bedrock notice says VR/MR devices are no longer supported in the latest updates.
Was PlayStation VR Minecraft a separate game?
No. Mojang described it as a free patch for the main PlayStation game, requiring PlayStation Camera and PSVR, with Immersive and Living Room modes.
Does Quest PC streaming make Minecraft a native Quest game?
No. Streaming a Windows PC VR build to Quest is still PCVR. It should not be described as an official standalone Quest edition, and the official sources here do not verify a current supported streaming setup.
