Gran Turismo 7 in VR

Short answer: Gran Turismo 7 has an official PlayStation VR2 mode on PlayStation 5. It is not a native Quest, PC VR, or PS4 VR game. The PS5 VR2 version arrived through update 1.29 at no additional cost; PS4 owners must first upgrade to the PS5 version. Last checked October 11, 2026.

What version actually supports VR?

The official PlayStation FAQ says the PS VR2 version is available on PS5 consoles with update 1.29. PlayStation's online manual is more explicit: PS VR2 is not compatible with the PlayStation 4 system or the original PlayStation VR. In other words, buying or owning the PS4 edition alone does not give you VR. You need the PS5 game entitlement and a PS5 console connected to a PS VR2 headset. (PlayStation's Gran Turismo 7 FAQ; Gran Turismo 7 online manual)

This is a console VR implementation, not a Windows PC VR release. The official sources checked here do not list a Steam, Meta Quest, or standalone Quest edition, and they do not document Quest streaming as an access route. Do not buy a PC copy or expect Link/Air Link to turn this PS5 title into a PC VR game.

How to get into VR

  1. Use a PS5 and a PS VR2 headset. Connect the headset to the PS5 as described by PlayStation's hardware instructions.
  2. Install or update Gran Turismo 7 to update 1.29 or later. The VR2 version is an update to the PS5 game, not a separately purchased VR edition.
  3. If you own the PS4 Standard Edition, use the official PS4-to-PS5 upgrade route first. A PS4 disc upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must remain available; a PS4 disc cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. (PlayStation FAQ)
  4. Launch the updated game with PS VR2 connected. The PlayStation Store identifies VR play styles as sitting, standing, and roomscale, and says PS VR2 is optional for the overall game. The store notes a 2 m × 2 m minimum play area for roomscale PS VR2 games; choose a seated setup if you do not have that space. (PlayStation Store listing)

What you can do in VR

This is not a small showroom demo. Polyphony Digital's manual says PS VR2 provides a 360-degree, 3D environment in online and offline races, with the exception of two-player split screen. The manual also names two dedicated modes: VR Showroom and VR Replay. It describes VR Showroom as a way to inspect detailed car models from different angles, with cars selected from Garage, Brand Central, Legend Cars, or Used Cars. Garage cars can be viewed against 12 listed backgrounds, including a pit garage, GT Café, GT Auto, and Home Garage.

After a race, VR Replay lets you view Time Trial and race replays from the player's perspective; VR replays can also be selected from Showcase. This gives headset owners a useful reason to explore the menus even when they are not racing. (Gran Turismo 7 online manual)

Controls and VR-specific limits

GT7 is not compatible with the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, according to the official manual. Plan to use a controller supported by the game and PS5; PlayStation specifically lists DualSense vibration and trigger effects, while the manual documents steering and viewpoint settings through the game's controls. The manual also says race perspective is limited to Cockpit View or Bonnet View, depending on whether the driven car has an interior perspective. Information shown in Cockpit View can be adjusted from the Quick Menu or the pause menu's settings.

PS VR2 haptic feedback can be set to Off, Collisions Only, or Collisions and Impacts under the controller settings. The PlayStation Store also warns that VR games may cause motion sickness and identifies PS VR2 as unsuitable for children under 12. These are official safety and configuration notes, not a promise of comfort or performance. VRHow has not independently tested image quality, frame rate, comfort, or compatibility with individual PS5 setups.

Which purchase makes sense?

For a new VR buyer, choose a PS5 version of GT7: the PlayStation listing shows a Standard Edition with PS4 and PS5 entitlement, and a Digital Deluxe Edition with dual entitlement plus listed digital extras. The VR feature itself is tied to the PS5 version and update, not to a special “VR edition.” If you already have the PS4 Standard Edition, compare the official upgrade cost rather than repurchasing the game; physical-disc owners need the disc-drive PS5 caveat above.

Online play is optional overall, but the Store says PS Plus is required for online play and supports up to 20 online players with PS Plus. The VR manual confirms both online and offline races are supported, so a PS Plus subscription is not presented as a prerequisite for every VR session. Prices and availability change, so check the current Store listing before buying.
