What is Boneworks?
Stress Level Zero’s Boneworks is described on its official Steam listing as an “Experimental Physics VR Adventure.” Its longer description calls it a narrative VR action adventure built around experimental physics, with physics-heavy combat, environments, and puzzles. [1]
Meta’s official announcement describes the player as a virtual security director investigating Monogon Industries and its artificial-intelligence operating system, Myth OS. [2]
Officially listed features
- Physics-based weapons, tools, and objects can be used across dangerous playscapes and mysterious architecture. [1]
- The Steam listing identifies single-player play and VR-only support. [1]
- Steam lists SteamVR as the VR support runtime and gives Windows 10 as the minimum operating system. [1]
Platform and delivery
PCVR: the Steam edition is delivered from a Windows PC through SteamVR. The Steam listing's minimum specification is based on Rift CV1 + Touch, the original Vive at 90 Hz, and Rift S at 80 Hz; those are the only headset configurations named in that specification. [1]
Meta’s 2020 first-party announcement also identifies a Boneworks release for the Rift Platform. [2] The reviewed official sources do not substantiate a native standalone Quest edition or a console VR edition of Boneworks, so neither is listed here.
Why physics is more than a combat gimmick
Stress Level Zero describes Boneworks as a physics-driven action adventure in which objects, weapons and the player's body are part of the simulation. Steam lists dynamic navigation, physics-heavy combat and puzzles, while the developer's description emphasizes that tools can be handled as physical objects across environments. That design creates room for improvisation: a player can think about what an object does in the space, rather than only selecting a fixed dialogue or inventory option. [1]
In Meta's interview, the developers say that creative improvisation is central to the experience and that they wanted the physics systems to support player agency across the campaign and replay. The story supplies a frame for experimentation: the player is a virtual security director investigating Monogon Industries and its Myth OS. The official listing also includes firearms and melee weapons, puzzles, traps and anomalous tools, so the game combines combat with interaction and exploration rather than functioning as a pure shooter. [2][1]
The same physical design comes with a clear audience note: Steam describes the mechanics as advanced and recommends previous VR experience. Treat that as the developer/store's guidance, not a universal comfort rating. This title is a PCVR game delivered through SteamVR; the sources do not identify a native Quest installation or a console VR release. The listed requirements belong only to the PC edition and are not a general compatibility promise for every headset. [1][2]
The developers' behind-the-scenes interview helps explain why the player's body and the environment receive so much attention. Meta says Stress Level Zero built around a physics foundation and body presence, and the team described creative improvisation as a goal: players can use the physical systems to solve or replay situations in their own way. Steam also calls out dynamic navigation and physics-based puzzles, alongside combat. The studio additionally notes that the game's unusual crablet enemies can be intense for people with arachnophobia, a useful content consideration that is more specific than a generic action-game label.
