PlayStation VR2 vs PC VR headsets
Specs and platform facts
| Criterion | PlayStation VR2 | PC VR headsets (category) |
|---|---|---|
| Display and lenses | OLED, 2000 × 2040 per eye; 90/120Hz; adjustable lens separation; approximately 110° field of view. | Not one standard. Display type, resolution, refresh rate, lens design and field of view are unverified for the category; check the named headset. |
| Headset/controller tracking | Four embedded cameras track the headset and controllers; an IR camera per eye provides eye tracking. Sony also describes room scanning during PC setup (Sony setup instructions). | Varies by headset and software. A universal tracking method or camera count is unverified. |
| Controllers and feedback | PS VR2 Sense controllers have finger-touch sensing, trigger effect and haptic feedback on supported PS5 content. On PC, Sony says HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers and Sense haptic feedback are not supported; basic controller vibration remains (Sony's PC/PS5 differences). | Controller type and feedback vary by model; category-wide claims are unverified. |
| Host and compatibility | PS5 required for PS VR2 console use; Sony says it is not compatible with PS4 and cannot play content requiring the original PS VR. On Windows PC it needs Sony's adapter and Steam/SteamVR/PS VR2 App (official requirements). | PC VR means a compatible computer plus a specific headset/runtime. There is no single host, OS, cable or console requirement for the category; unverified. |
| Representative PC baseline | For PS VR2 on PC: Windows 10/11 64-bit, Intel Core i5-7600 or Ryzen 3 3100, 8GB+ RAM, listed dedicated GPU, DisplayPort 1.4, direct USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.0+. Sony recommends RTX 3060+ or RX 6600 XT+ for best performance; that is a recommendation, not a guarantee. | Valve's SteamVR page lists a software minimum of Intel i5-4590/AMD FX 8350-equivalent, 4GB RAM and GTX 970/R9 290-equivalent graphics, plus broadband, USB 2.0+ and HDMI 1.4/DisplayPort 1.2+. This is a SteamVR baseline, not a universal headset requirement. |
| US price and availability | On the US direct PlayStation page checked October 11, 2026, PS VR2 is shown at $399 and the page currently says “Currently Unavailable.” The PC adapter is shown at $59 and also says “Currently Unavailable”; a DisplayPort 1.4 cable is sold separately. | No single PC VR price or availability exists. Model-specific current price is unverified; check the seller and the exact headset. |
The PC VR column intentionally does not pretend that a broad category is one headset. For a real purchase comparison, name the PC headset and compare its official display, lens, tracking, controller, runtime, price and requirements against the PS VR2 figures above.
Tradeoffs that matter
- Display choice: PS VR2's verified OLED, per-eye resolution, refresh-rate range and approximate field of view are fixed product facts. PC VR may offer a different combination, but no category-wide winner can be stated without a named model.
- Tracking and features: PS VR2 has camera-based headset/controller tracking and eye-tracking hardware, but several PS5 features are disabled on PC. That makes the same headset meaningfully different across its two hosts.
- Setup and cost: PS5 play requires a PS5 and compatible PS VR2 game. PC play adds the $59 adapter as listed by Sony, a separately sold DisplayPort 1.4 cable, direct USB, Bluetooth and the three Steam apps (Sony's setup list). PC VR category costs cannot be calculated without a model.
- Library: Sony says PS5 use selects PS VR2 games while PC use selects VR games available on Steam (official compatibility explanation). Valve says SteamVR supports Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality and other supported headsets (SteamVR); that does not mean every Steam title supports every headset.
Which fits whom?
PS VR2 fits a PS5 owner who wants a defined headset, OLED display and a direct console setup, and accepts that its PC mode drops several PS5-specific features. It also fits a PC owner only if the PC meets Sony's exact requirements and the adapter/cable path is acceptable. A different PC VR headset fits only after model-level checking: choose it when that headset's own display, tracking, controllers, runtime, game support and price match the buyer's computer and software priorities. Those are criteria-based recommendations, not hands-on rankings.
Source conflict
Valve's SteamVR listing still displays a minimum OS of Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or later and separately notes that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024 (Valve). Sony's PS VR2 PC requirements specify Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit (Sony). This page uses Sony's newer, product-specific Windows 10/11 requirement for PS VR2 and labels Valve's figures only as a representative SteamVR software baseline. Availability also conflicts within Sony's pages: the PS VR2 product page says ‘Available now’, while the US Direct listing says ‘Currently Unavailable’ when checked October 11, 2026; the latter is the dated seller-status report used in the table.
