Best VR headsets for PS5 in 2026
A PS5 buying guide based on official platform support—not a hands-on ranking. The important decision is whether you want PS5's current PS VR2 library or the older, separate PS VR catalogue.
The real PS5 VR choices

| Newer PS5-native VR games and current PlayStation features | PS VR2 | It is Sony's headset for PS5 VR2 games, connects by one USB-C cable, and includes PS VR2 Sense controllers. It does not play original PS VR titles. Sony compatibility details. |
| A specific game collection you already own for original PS VR | Original PS VR | Sony says supported PS VR games can be played on PS5, but you need the PS4 PlayStation Camera and the Camera adapter; the PS5 HD Camera is not a substitute. This is a separate, older setup and does not run PS VR2 games. Sony's PS VR on PS5 information. |
| Wireless standalone VR, with the PS5 as a separate device | Do not buy on an assumed PS5 VR feature | This guide includes only the PlayStation VR systems documented by Sony for PS5 VR. A headset being wireless, having USB-C, or showing a PS5 flat-screen video feed is not proof that it supports PS5 VR games. |
| SteamVR games as well as a PS5 headset | PS VR2 plus its PC setup, if you also own a suitable Windows PC | PC play is a separate use: Sony requires a PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable and Steam software, and lists several PS5 features that are absent on PC. It does not make SteamVR titles playable on the PS5. PC requirements · PC/PS5 differences. |
“Original PS VR” means the first PlayStation VR headset; “PS VR2” is the newer PS5 headset. Their games and controllers are not interchangeable. Sony's official compatibility guide explains the distinction and tells buyers to check each game's VR support before purchase.
Why PS VR2 is the default recommendation
PS VR2 is the direct fit if your goal is a current PS5 VR game, rather than a VR headset that happens to work elsewhere. Sony's published specification lists an OLED display, 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, a 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh rate, adjustable lens separation and an approximately 110-degree field of view. The headset has eye-tracking cameras and headset vibration; the included Sense controllers provide haptics and adaptive triggers. Those are manufacturer specifications and supported features, not a claim that every game uses every feature. Sony's PS VR2 specifications · Sony's feature overview.
Setup is comparatively direct: PS VR2 connects to a PS5 with one USB-C cable, and the headset includes the left and right Sense controllers. Sony lists a USB pairing/charging cable, stereo headphones and three pairs of earpieces in the box as well. The console is a separate requirement, and you still need a PS VR2-compatible game; a regular PS5 game does not automatically become a VR game. Check game support before you choose a bundle
Look for the specific PS VR2 compatibility marking on a game's PlayStation Store page. “PS5 game” by itself does not mean “VR2 game.” Sony's PS5 library filter also lets you filter games by VR, and its game pages identify whether a title supports PS VR or PS VR2. For a quick idea of what the platform offers, Sony currently highlights Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil 4 VR Mode; check the linked catalogue and the exact edition's store page for current availability and purchase requirements. How Sony labels compatible games · Official PS VR2 games catalogue.
If your shortlist is a single title, decide from that title first: confirm the exact PS5 edition, VR mode and required controller on its store listing, then buy the headset. Sony says some PS VR2 games support a DualSense controller, while PS VR2 Sense is compatible only with PS VR2 and PS5; original PS Move and PS VR Aim controllers are not compatible with PS VR2. A game's store page is the authority for its own controller requirements. Sony's controller compatibility notes.
The important limits before you spend
- PS VR2 is for PS5, not PS4. Sony says PS VR2 is compatible with PS5 consoles and not PS4. A PS4-era original PS VR headset is a different product and has different setup needs. Platform compatibility.
- Old and new game libraries do not cross over. Sony is explicit: original PS VR cannot play PS VR2 games, and PS VR2 cannot play original PS VR content. Do not buy PS VR2 expecting your PS VR disc or digital library to work in it. Game compatibility.
- A PS5 game can appear on a headset without being VR. PS VR2 Cinematic Mode displays non-VR PS5 games and entertainment on a virtual screen (Sony lists 1920 × 1080 HDR and 24, 60 or 120 Hz options). That is a cinema-style 2D view, not a stereoscopic VR mode or motion-controlled conversion. Sony on Cinematic Mode.
- Room size varies by game and play style. Sony says sitting and standing modes need at least 1 m × 1 m of clear space, while roomscale needs at least 2 m × 2 m. It also says to check the supported play style for each title. Measure your usable space before buying for a roomscale game. Play styles and space guidance · Compatibility and play-style labels.
- PS VR2 on PC is an add-on use case, not an alternative PS5 mode. Sony's PC setup calls for a separate PC adapter and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable; it uses Steam, SteamVR and Sony's PS VR2 app. On PC, Sony lists HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, controller adaptive triggers and controller haptics beyond basic vibration as unsupported. PC setup requirements · Feature differences.
- Check fit and safety information. Sony describes an adjustable headband, scope and lenses, but fit is personal; if possible, use a retailer with a clear local return policy. Sony says PS VR2 is not for children under 12. Fit and setup information · Age guidance.
When original PS VR is the better buy
Choose the original headset only if your reason is specific: you want to play a known original-PS-VR title, already have or can source the required older hardware, and have checked that title's PS5 compatibility. Sony says supported PS VR games run on PS5 through backward compatibility, but the setup needs a PlayStation Camera made for PS4 (model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2) and a PlayStation Camera adapter. Sony says its PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with original PS VR. Some games also require or work with PlayStation Move or the PS VR Aim controller, so check the game's listing and what a used bundle actually includes. This makes an old headset a title-led, condition-sensitive purchase—not a cheaper substitute for PS VR2. Before buying used, verify that the headset, processor unit, cables, camera, camera adapter and any game-specific controller are included and working; the exact contents and local second-hand price depend on the particular listing, so we do not assign a universal value. Sony's support information is the source for required equipment; the individual seller is responsible for what their bundle includes.
Price and availability: check locally
There is no single reliable worldwide PS VR2 price: local retail prices, bundles, stock and promotions can differ and change. We have deliberately not copied a one-country or sale price into this guide. Check the PlayStation product page for your region and compare the complete local checkout price at reputable retailers. For original PS VR, include the required camera and adapter—and any title-specific controllers—in the total rather than comparing headset-only used listings. Our inclusion criteria and sourcing
This is a platform-compatibility guide, not a laboratory comparison. We include the two PlayStation VR systems that Sony's own material documents for PS5 use: PS VR2 for PS VR2 content, and original PS VR for supported legacy PS VR content with its required camera setup. We compare the decision factors that change the purchase—game generation, setup, required hardware, room needs and PC crossover. We do not invent performance scores, claim comparative comfort or image-quality test results, or imply that VRHow has tested either headset. Any unspecified model-by-model PS5 support or regional price is left to the maker's compatibility listing or local seller rather than guessed here.
Sony's current support, product, technical specification and game-catalogue pages are linked beside the claims they support. We found no material contradiction in the official PS5 compatibility statements used here: PS VR2 is the PS5 system for PS VR2 games; original PS VR content requires original PS VR hardware. Store prices and stock are intentionally treated as regional and time-sensitive, not as fixed guide facts. Last checked October 11, 2026.
