VR headset finder

Start with your setup. Pick the main way you plan to use a headset. The result is a shortlist of devices whose manufacturers document that setup—not a “best headset” score or a complete buying guide. Last checked October 11, 2026.

Standalone VR gaming

These Quest models are designed to run without a PC or console; Meta also documents an optional Windows PC link path. Check the store listing for every game you plan to play.

  • Meta Quest 3: 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, pancake optics, and 72/90/120 Hz. Consider it when its published display/lens combination is important to you. Meta's comparison page.
  • Meta Quest 3S: 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye, Fresnel optics, and 72/90/120 Hz. It is another standalone Quest option; verify game-specific support rather than assuming every title works on every headset. Meta's Quest 3S specifications.

This is a Quest-focused shortlist, not a ranking or a claim that other standalone headsets cannot play games. The sample does not score game catalogs.

PlayStation 5

  • PlayStation VR2: the matching candidate when your target is the PS5 platform. Sony's technical specifications list an OLED display at 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye and 90/120 Hz, and say it connects to PS5 by USB-C. Verify that each title is specifically a PS VR2 title—Sony says original PS VR games are not compatible.

PS VR2 can also connect to a Windows PC with Sony's separate adapter and required hardware/software; that is a distinct setup, not plug-and-play equivalence with PS5.

Windows PC VR / SteamVR

These options have documented PC paths, but the hardware and setup differ. Check your PC against the maker's current requirements before buying.

  • Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S: use Meta Horizon Link with a compatible Windows PC. The headset can also run standalone; the cited Link page lists separate PC requirements. Meta Link PC requirements.
  • PlayStation VR2: Sony documents PC use with a PS VR2 PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, USB 3.0, Steam, SteamVR and the PS VR2 app. Sony's PC setup requirements.
  • Valve Index: a tethered PC system with DisplayPort and USB connections plus compatible SteamVR base stations. Valve lists 144 Hz as experimental; it is not a standalone headset. Valve Index specifications.

A PC's GPU, ports, operating system, Wi‑Fi/network, and the particular VR title affect compatibility. This finder does not scan your PC or guarantee performance.

Standalone spatial apps, media or productivity

This route emphasizes manufacturer-documented standalone platforms and input; it is not a software-library or comfort score.

  • Apple Vision Pro (M5): runs visionOS and lists hands, eyes and voice as input. Apple specifies a 23-million-pixel micro-OLED 3D display system (not per-eye resolution on that page) and up to 2.5 hours of general use. Its listed 750–800 g device weight includes the Light Seal and counterbalanced Dual Knit Band and varies by configuration; the separate battery is 353 g. Apple technical specifications.
  • Samsung Galaxy XR: Samsung describes a standalone Android XR headset controlled by eyes, hands and voice, with dual 3552 × 3840 micro-OLED displays and up to 90 Hz. Samsung lists up to 2 hours of enhanced use or 2.5 hours of content playback. Samsung Galaxy XR details.
  • Meta Quest 3 / 3S: both have full-colour passthrough and standalone operation. Compare their cited resolution and optics in the headset comparison tool; confirm that the apps you need are available on the Quest platform.

Apple and Samsung also support game controllers or optional controllers, but this does not establish that a particular VR game or PC VR workflow is supported. Confirm app availability and compatibility before purchase.
