Why is my VR headset overheating?
Warm is not the same as overheating
Informational: Meta says some Quest contact points, including front surfaces, may feel warm during use or charging. That alone does not prove a fault. Treat the situation as overheating when the headset gives a thermal warning, feels hot or uncomfortable, becomes abnormally warm while used or charged, or shows a battery or physical-damage symptom. Meta's warning says to remove a Quest immediately after an overheating alert and let it cool before continuing.
Likely contributors are blocked airflow, a hot room or storage location, direct sunlight, charging while using the headset, or a damaged or contaminated charging connection. These are risk factors—not a diagnosis of your particular unit. Model, software version and the exact warning can change the correct next step.
Safe checks first
- Stop and remove the headset. If it is hot, uncomfortable, or showing an alert, stop the session. Turn it off using the normal control and disconnect the charging cable or adapter if you can do so without touching a hot or damaged connector. Do not resume just to test it while it is hot.
- Move it to a safe cooling location. Put it on a hard, clear surface away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Never cover it with clothing, bedding or a pillow. Meta specifically requires adequate airflow around the Quest headset, adapter and controllers; it also lists an operating range of 32–95°F (0–35°C) for Quest. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator or other heat source to dry or cool it.
- Check the outside only. Look for blocked vents, liquid, corrosion, a damaged cable or adapter, cracks, swelling, smoke or an unusual smell. Keep charging contacts, ports and cables clean and dry. Do not insert tools, spray cleaner, or disassemble the headset to reach a vent or battery.
- Separate charging from diagnosis. Do not wear a Meta Quest while it is connected to the power adapter or charging. If it becomes abnormally warm during charging, do not keep charging it. Do not use an external battery pack or power source unless the headset maker authorizes it.
- Try again only after it is fully cool. Use a short, supervised test in a ventilated room, without charging. If the alert returns, it heats quickly, or the symptom occurs repeatedly, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer's support. Cooling is a diagnosis step, not a repair.
Platform-specific cautions
Meta Quest: Meta says not to use a Quest that is broken or damaged, and says its built-in rechargeable battery is not user-replaceable or serviceable. Do not open, puncture, bend, repair or replace that battery yourself. If the headset or controller is swollen, leaking, smoking, damaged, or abnormally warm during use or charging, stop using and charging it and contact Meta Quest Support.
PlayStation VR2: Sony's public safety page says to follow the headset manual and on-screen safety instructions and to take regular breaks. It does not publish the same temperature range or battery cautions cited above for Quest, so do not apply those numbers to PS VR2. Identify whether the symptom occurs on PS5 or PC and follow the matching support path; do not assume one setup's cause applies to the other. For persistent heat, use PlayStation VR2 Support.
When to stop completely
Actionable safety rule: do not charge or use a device that is damaged, will not turn on after charging, is abnormally warm, swollen, leaking or smoking. Keep it away from flammable materials and do not attempt a battery repair. If there is smoke, fire or leaking battery fluid, move away and seek appropriate emergency help; do not handle the device unnecessarily. A headset that repeatedly overheats needs vendor diagnosis or service, not a fan accessory or an improvised cooling method.
