VRHow / Guides / How-to / VR controller connection
Why are my VR controllers not connecting?
What the symptom tells you
Informational: an LED that is off usually points to power or charging; an error pattern points to a device or firmware problem; a powered controller that the headset does not list is more likely unpaired. If the controller appears connected but movement is wrong, that is a tracking problem rather than pairing. Do not open the headset or controller, bypass safety features, or attempt a battery repair.
Low-risk checks for any system
- Stop the VR app and put the headset or console in a stable, safe place. Check the controller’s charge indicator. Charge it with the supplied or manufacturer-recommended cable, or replace/reseat its removable battery as the vendor specifies.
- Power-cycle the controller and restart the headset, console, or SteamVR. Keep the controller close to the headset while pairing, and remove third-party covers, sleeves, or stickers that could obstruct buttons, sensors, or tracking.
- Install only updates offered by the headset, console, or official companion app. Do not download unofficial firmware or use a “driver fixer.” If a reset is necessary, use the platform-specific procedure below and understand that a headset factory reset can erase local data.
Meta Quest Touch controllers
Actionable: Meta says Touch pairing must use the Meta Horizon mobile app. Turn on and unlock the headset, open the app, then go to Menu → Devices → your headset → Headset settings → Controllers → Pair new controller. Choose left or right, then hold the Meta/Oculus + B buttons on the right controller, or Menu + Y on the left, until its LED blinks. The phone’s Bluetooth must be on, and the phone and headset must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Meta’s pairing instructions note that the headset must be on and unlocked.
Before pairing, remove any battery pull-tabs and change or reseat the battery. For Meta’s SOS LED pattern (three fast, three slow, three fast blinks), Meta’s sequence is: reseat the battery, restart the headset, unpair and re-pair in the app, check for software updates, then hold the headset power button for 30 seconds for a hard reboot. A factory reset is a last resort: Meta warns it erases headset data. If there is still no LED activity with a fresh battery, contact Meta support rather than attempting a repair.
PS VR2 Sense controllers on PS5
Actionable: turn on the PS5, connect one Sense controller to it with the included USB cable, and press its PS button; repeat for the other controller. Remove the cable after pairing. Sony says a controller can pair with only one PS5 at a time, so repeat this process when changing consoles. Charge both controllers if their battery is low. Controller software updates are delivered with PS5 system software when the controller is paired.
If a Sense controller still will not pair, turn off the PS5, press the small reset button on the back with a pin or similar tool, reconnect it with the USB cable, and press PS. This is Sony’s documented reset procedure; do not substitute a random cable or force the connector. PS VR2 used on a PC follows a separate official PC-adapter setup and support path, not the PS5 pairing steps.
SteamVR / Valve Index
Actionable: confirm the controller is charged and powered, update its firmware, and restart SteamVR. In SteamVR’s status window, choose Devices → Pair Controller, then hold System + B for a few seconds. Valve identifies a blue LED as powered but not paired; power-cycle it if pairing fails. An unlit LED means it needs charge. For a Valve Index hard reset, Valve says to charge over USB for 10 minutes, unplug it, hold System for 15 seconds, and power it on again. If the LED is flashing red after a firmware update, or the problem persists, use Steam Support rather than repeating resets.
When to stop troubleshooting
Diagnosis is not repair. Stop if a port, cable, battery compartment, or controller is visibly damaged, unusually hot, swollen, or wet. Do not continue charging damaged hardware. Contact the manufacturer or authorized repair channel, and include the headset model, controller side, LED behavior, and which official steps you tried. For a related headset-side symptom, see headset not detected; for Quest-to-PC connection steps, see connect Quest to a PC. Menu labels can change with software updates, so the linked vendor instructions take precedence.
