How to troubleshoot Quest controllers

Short answer: identify whether this is power/pairing, optical tracking, or thumbstick drift. Remove the battery briefly, restart, and re-pair in the Meta Horizon app before considering anything destructive. Calibration is for drift only; a factory reset is Meta’s last resort and erases headset data. Last checked October 11, 2026.

Choose the matching symptom

This guide covers Meta Quest Touch controllers. An Xbox or other Bluetooth gamepad is a different device with a different support path. Organisation-managed Quests may also have different pairing rules; Meta says the personal-device instructions below do not apply to those devices.

1. Do the reversible power checks

  1. Check that the battery pull tab is removed. Reseat the battery or install a fresh, correctly oriented battery. Do not open the controller, repair a battery, or use one that is swollen or damaged.
  2. Remove unsupported third-party sleeves, covers, stickers, or other accessories. Meta says these can interfere with pairing or tracking.
  3. If the controller has a removable battery, remove it for at least 30 seconds, then reinstall it.
  4. Restart the headset: while it is on, hold the power button until the power screen appears and select Restart. If the headset itself is unresponsive, Meta’s separate procedure is to hold the power button for at least 30 seconds, wait 30 seconds, and turn it on again.

Expected result: the controller LED should show activity and the controller should appear in the headset. If there is still no LED with a fresh battery, do not disassemble it; Meta says a hardware defect is possible and directs users to Meta Store Support.

2. Pair or unpair the controller

Procedure: Meta says Touch controllers can only be paired through the Meta Horizon phone app. Turn on Bluetooth, update the app, keep the phone unlocked, and make sure the phone and headset are on the same Wi-Fi network.

  1. Turn on the headset and open the Meta Horizon app.
  2. Tap Menu > Devices, select the headset, then Headset settings > Controllers > Pair new controller.
  3. Select left or right. Hold Meta/Oculus + B on the right controller, or Menu + Y on the left, until the LED blinks and lights up. Complete the app prompt.
  4. If the controller is listed but unreliable, select it and tap Unpair controller, then repeat the pairing flow.

If a passcode prevents controller use, Meta says you can use the headset’s white-dot gaze cursor and volume buttons to enter it. If pairing succeeds, the controller should reconnect automatically when it is nearby the next time the headset starts.

3. Fix tracking loss or inaccurate movement

  1. Use enough ordinary light to see clearly, but not direct sunlight. Turn off or move small lights such as LED strips.
  2. Move away from mirrors, glass, polished marble, and other reflective surfaces.
  3. Make sure nothing blocks the headset’s tracking cameras from seeing the controllers. Clean those cameras only according to Meta’s maintenance and care guidance; do not spray cleaner into the headset.
  4. Repeat the restart and pairing steps above.

Expected result: tracking should remain stable when the controllers are visible to the headset cameras in the changed environment. If it fails only in one room, the environment is a stronger suspect; if it fails everywhere after re-pairing, contact Meta Support rather than repeatedly resetting the headset.

4. Calibrate thumbstick drift

Supported models in Meta’s current instructions: Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2, and Quest Pro. From the headset, open Settings > Devices > Controllers. Under Thumbstick range and deadzone, select the affected stick and follow the on-screen recalibration. If drift remains, try a larger deadzone.

A larger deadzone changes how much stick movement is ignored; it does not demonstrate that a mechanical fault is repaired. If drift remains after calibration, contact Meta Support. Do not open the controller based on this guide.

Last resort: factory reset

Only use this after the reversible checks and Meta’s pairing flow fail. A factory reset is irreversible: it removes account information, downloaded games, and other content from the headset. Purchased content remains tied to the account and can be downloaded again, but cloud backup and sign-in should be prepared first. Meta also advises at least 50% headset battery before resetting.

Follow Meta’s official factory-reset procedure. For a controller that still will not pair, Meta’s pairing article says to remove the controller batteries during the reset, insert fresh batteries at the initial setup screen, and follow the setup pairing prompts. If the controller still will not pair after that, contact Meta Support. Menu names and available settings can vary by hardware, account, region, and software version; this guide is dated because Meta’s instructions change.
