How to install VR mods
First, identify the game and platform
Informational: Mods change a particular game or software. Valve says the game must support modding, you must own the base game, and Workshop content is not automatically endorsed by Valve or the game developer. Read the game's own mod instructions before downloading anything. A PC version and a Quest version of the same title can use different files and different mods.
| Where the game runs | Use first | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| PC VR (Steam) | Steam Workshop or the game's official instructions | That a Quest/Android mod works on the PC build |
| Standalone Meta Quest | The game's built-in browser, or a compatible APK workflow documented by the developer | That every PC mod or APK is compatible |
| PS VR2 | PS5 game's supported content, or PC mod instructions after official PC setup | That a PS5 mod can be copied from a PC |
Decision point: if the game's page or developer names a Workshop, in-game browser, or mod manager, use that route. If it only provides a PC manual install, follow that game's folder/version instructions. If it only provides a Quest APK, confirm that it is an authorized build for that game and headset; Meta's APK documentation explains developer testing, not that an arbitrary consumer mod is supported.
Safer installation steps
- Confirm the target build. Write down the game edition (Steam PC, another PC store, Quest, or PS5), game version, headset, and mod version. Check the mod's requirements, dependencies, permissions, and compatibility notes on its official distribution or the game's community page. Expected result: you can name the exact game/build the mod supports. If those details are missing, stop rather than guessing.
- Prefer the built-in route. On Steam, open the game's Workshop or Community-made Mods area, choose a mod, and use its subscribe/install control. Valve says supported Workshop content can appear automatically in the game; each game's instructions determine how it is enabled. Wait for Steam to finish downloading, then check the game's own mod menu or load-order screen. Do not infer compatibility from ratings alone: Valve says mods are generally community-made and not automatically endorsed.
- For a manual PC mod, follow the game's exact instructions. Close the game, keep the downloaded archive until you have tested the result, and copy files only to the folder and version named by the mod author. Do not run an unknown executable or replace unrelated files. If the game provides a mod manager or load-order screen, use it instead of inventing a folder path. Expected result: the mod appears in the game's documented menu or the author's stated verification check.
- For a standalone Quest APK, treat it as a development-style install—not proof of mod support. Meta documents that Quest normally runs apps from the Meta Horizon Store; developer mode authorizes installing and debugging apps from outside that store. It requires a verified developer account/team, and Meta's current steps use the Meta Horizon mobile app. On Windows, Meta also documents installing its Oculus ADB drivers. Only use this route when the game's developer explicitly supports that Quest build and file format; do not sideload a random APK or assume a PC mod's license, save data, or dependencies carry over.
- Install the supported package, then test reversibly. Meta Quest Developer Hub can install a supplied APK from Device Manager; Meta says installed apps appear under Library > Unknown Sources. Launch the game without adding several mods at once. If it fails, remove or disable the last change, restore the original files, and check the game's logs or official support instructions. Expected result: the unmodified game still launches before you add another mod.
PS VR2 and the “SteamVR on Quest” distinction
For PS VR2 on PC, Sony's procedure installs Steam, SteamVR, and the PlayStation VR2 App on the Windows PC, then connects the headset through the PS VR2 PC adapter. That is a PC-VR setup; it is separate from PS5 content and does not make a PS5 mod installable. Similarly, a Quest can stream PC VR through a PC connection, but this page does not claim SteamVR installs or runs natively on the headset. Use the platform's official PC setup before following PC-game mod instructions.
Compatibility and rollback checks
- Change one mod at a time and record its version and dependencies. A game update can invalidate a previously working mod; re-check the author's compatibility note before re-enabling it.
- Keep an unmodified copy or use the game's own “verify files” or disable controls; follow the publisher's procedure if one is provided.
- Never bypass headset safety, account, or platform protections to load a mod. Developer mode is intended by Meta for development, debugging, and testing; Meta warns that other activity may lead to account limitations.
- If a mod causes a crash, first remove the newest change and test the unmodified game. Do not open a headset or battery, and do not perform a destructive reset as a first troubleshooting step.
