How to fix VR boundary problems

Short answer: stop moving, make the real play area safe, then redraw the boundary in the headset’s room-setup tool. If it keeps disappearing, first check lighting and changes to furniture; do not disable a safety boundary to work around a tracking fault. Last checked October 11, 2026.

What the boundary is—and what failure looks like

A boundary (also called Guardian, chaperone, or play area) is a headset safety overlay that warns when you approach the edge of the defined space. It is not a guarantee that you will avoid furniture or other people. In OpenXR, a room-scale STAGE reference space is runtime-defined and may not exist until the user defines one in the platform UI, so a game cannot repair a missing or incorrect play area by itself (Khronos OpenXR specification).

Separate diagnosis from repair: “the boundary is offset, too small, missing, or repeatedly forgotten” points to room setup or tracking conditions; “the headset loses position everywhere” is a broader tracking problem. For the latter, see Quest tracking troubleshooting if you use Quest.

Low-risk checks first

  1. Pause and clear the area. Remove chairs, cables, pets, and other obstacles from the intended play space. Keep other people outside it. Never continue swinging or walking while the boundary is wrong.
  2. Improve the view of the room. Use even, adequate indoor lighting and avoid direct sunlight in the play area. Meta says major lighting changes can make a Quest treat the room as new; its support guidance also recommends looking around the room while drawing the boundary (Meta Quest boundary troubleshooting).
  3. Recenter only if the boundary is consistently shifted. Follow the headset’s own floor-level or recenter control, then test while stationary. A recenter changes the reference pose; it does not make an unsafe room safe.

Meta Quest: redraw or clear the boundary

On current Quest software, open the Navigator with the Meta/Oculus button on the right controller, then choose Quick controls → Settings → Environment setup → Boundary → Adjust boundary. Choose Stationary when you will sit or stand in place, or Roomscale when you will move around. Meta recommends at least 6.5 × 6.5 ft (2 × 2 m) of safe, unobstructed room-scale space and describes Stationary mode as a default 3 × 3 ft (1 × 1 m) area (Meta’s boundary setup instructions).

If the stored outline is wrong, use Environment setup → Boundary → Clear Boundary History, then create it again from the centre of the intended area. Meta says this clears boundary anchors for the account but does not clear scenes, tracking, or maps. If the problem is only that a game is constrained by Stationary mode, open the in-app Navigator and choose Boundary → Switch to Roomscale; the preference can be different for VR Home and individual apps.

PC VR and other headsets

Menu names depend on the headset and runtime. SteamVR’s chaperone and a headset vendor’s Guardian are separate platform features; change the boundary in the runtime that owns it, not inside an individual game. Windows Mixed Reality is legacy guidance, not a current setup target: Microsoft marks its documentation retired and says WMR devices are unsupported on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later; the published support range is Windows 10 version 20H2 through Windows 11 version 23H2. Only consult its archived boundary instructions for a PC that remains in that supported range (Microsoft’s retired Windows Mixed Reality FAQ). For current headsets, use the current manufacturer support instructions rather than guessing at equivalent menu labels.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the headset cannot track even in a clear, evenly lit room, loses position immediately after a redraw, or shows a damaged lens, camera, cable, or housing, stop using it and contact the manufacturer. Do not open the headset, handle its battery or lasers, bypass safety features, or factory-reset it merely to fix a boundary outline. A factory reset is destructive and should only follow the vendor’s explicit support procedure after backup and account checks.
