How to fix VR black screens

Short answer: first determine whether the headset is powered but showing no image, or whether the PC/console is not detecting it. Stop and reconnect the correct cable, restart the headset and host, then update the relevant software. Use a factory reset only as the manufacturer's last resort. Last checked October 11, 2026.

Diagnose before repairing

Informational: a black display with audio or a visible tracking LED points to a display, connection or software path; no lights, no charging response or unusual heat can indicate a power or hardware problem instead. If the headset is hot, wet, swollen, smells unusual, has a damaged cable or has been dropped, unplug it, stop using it and contact the manufacturer. Do not open the headset, probe ports or bypass safety features.

If the PC or PS5 also reports that the headset is disconnected, prioritize cable, port and detection checks. Menu names and update procedures can vary by model, region and software version.

Low-risk checks for any headset

  1. Wait if it is updating. On Meta Quest, a stuck Meta logo or computer-chip icon may mean an update is installing; Meta says to wait up to 15 minutes before other troubleshooting.
  2. Power down and reseat. Turn off the headset and host. Disconnect and reconnect the headset cable at both ends without forcing the connector. For headsets that use a PC link box or dedicated video connection, follow the manufacturer's GPU and port requirements. Valve's Index guidance says the monitor and link box should connect to the same GPU, and that both ports must work; do not assume an adapter or motherboard output is supported.
  3. Restart both sides. Start the headset and PC/console again. Do not repeatedly unplug a powered connector or continue if the cable or port is loose, hot or damaged.
  4. Check updates. Install headset/console software and, for PC VR, the graphics-driver update supplied by the GPU maker. If an update fails, use the vendor's support procedure rather than an unofficial firmware file.

Meta Quest: standalone or Link

Actionable: for a Quest that remains black, hold Power + Volume Down for at least 10 seconds until the boot screen loads. Use the volume buttons to select Boot device, then press Power. If that does not help, Meta's documented update path is Meta Horizon mobile app > Menu > Devices > your headset > Headset settings > Software update (the label may instead be under Advanced settings). The headset must be on and connected to the same Wi-Fi as the phone and to the Meta account.

For Quest Link, also restart the computer and check the USB-C/link cable and the PC's graphics-driver version. Cleaning lenses will not restore a display that does not power on. Meta lists a factory reset only after the preceding steps; it erases headset data, so follow Meta's current reset procedure carefully.

PS VR2: PS5 versus PC

Actionable: on PS5, turn off the console, unplug and firmly reconnect the PS VR2 headset cable at the headset and console, then restart. If the display is present but misplaced in cinematic mode, hold the PS VR2 Sense controller's Options button to reposition it, as PlayStation documents. For persistent faults, use PlayStation Support/Repairs rather than opening the headset.

On a PC, PS VR2 uses Sony's official PC adapter and its PC connection requirements; it is not the same troubleshooting path as PS VR2 on PS5. Follow PlayStation's PS VR2 on PC troubleshooting for the adapter, DisplayPort-compliant cable and USB connection. Do not infer that a PS5-only step or port arrangement applies to the PC adapter.

SteamVR on PC

Actionable: in Steam Library, right-click SteamVR > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Tool Files. Update the graphics driver, restart SteamVR and Windows, and check every headset connection. In SteamVR, Devices > Restart headset is Valve's documented restart path for connection messages such as “Headset Display Disconnected.”

If the headset is detected but its display is black, Valve documents SteamVR > Settings > Developer > Enable Direct Mode; Direct Mode keeps the HMD from being treated as a normal monitor. If that option cannot be enabled, update the GPU driver. Use safe mode only to diagnose third-party SteamVR driver conflicts, and revert changes rather than disabling security or changing BIOS settings casually.

When to stop

A reset, replacement or repair is appropriate only after the official steps for your exact model. Meta says its factory reset erases all headset data; PlayStation and Valve direct unresolved hardware or connection problems to support. Keep the play area clear and remove the headset before moving around—do not troubleshoot while walking or near stairs.
