How to fix VR audio problems
Diagnose before repairing
Informational: “No sound” can mean a muted headset, a host computer sending sound to its speakers, an app-specific mute, a loose plug, or an unsupported accessory. Test a short system sound and a second VR app at comfortable volume. If only one app fails, its own audio and microphone settings are the likely boundary; if every app fails, continue with device routing.
Safety: Pause, remove the headset if you need to handle a cable, and keep volume comfortable. Do not insert tools into ports, bypass safety features, open the headset, remove a battery, or install unofficial firmware. Stop if a connector is damaged, the device is wet, unusually hot, swollen, or smells abnormal; contact the manufacturer instead.
Low-risk checks for any setup
- Check the headset’s volume controls and the host console or PC volume. Confirm mute is off for both playback and microphone. If you use headphones, reseat the plug or reconnect them once; test without a third-party splitter or cover.
- Check the app’s audio and voice-chat controls. Select the intended microphone, and make a brief recording or call to distinguish a microphone fault from a speaker fault.
- Restart the affected game or VR runtime, then restart the headset and host device normally. Install pending official system, headset and runtime updates before deeper troubleshooting.
- Change one thing at a time and retest. That preserves the diagnosis and avoids a destructive reset that cannot prove what caused the problem.
Meta Quest with Link or Air Link
Actionable steps: Meta says to update software, make sure neither the computer nor headset is muted, and check both input and output sources. On the computer, open Meta Horizon Link → Devices → your headset, then check Hear Computer Audio in VR and Hear VR Audio from Computer. In Windows, select the taskbar speaker, open the device list, and set both audio and microphone to Oculus Virtual Audio Device; choose the same input and output in any third-party VR software. Menu labels may vary by software version. These checks follow Meta’s Link audio guidance.
If removing an unsupported cover, sticker or other accessory makes the microphone or speakers work, leave it off and consult the accessory maker; Meta identifies unsupported accessories as a possible cause. If Link works but standalone Quest does not, treat them as separate paths.
Standalone Quest headphones and Bluetooth
Compatibility note: Ports and support differ by model. Meta documents 3.5 mm and USB-C headphones for Quest 3, but says only the 3.5 mm set works when both are connected, USB-C headphones do not work with the Elite Strap with Battery attached, and the 3.5 mm connection does not support a Quest 3 headset microphone. Meta does not guarantee every USB-C headphone or adapter. Check the exact model’s documentation before treating a working speaker but failed microphone as a headset fault.
Bluetooth can introduce audio delay on Quest; Meta notes that a few seconds of silence or a brief reconnect may also occur when compatible LE Audio switches modes on entering an immersive game. If pairing succeeds but timing or dropouts are the symptom, test a wired option or follow Meta’s current Bluetooth procedure.
SteamVR on a Windows PC
Actionable steps: Valve’s SteamVR sound procedure says to open Windows Sound → Playback and select the headset’s playback device—for example, HTC-VIVE-C—as default. If that fails, Valve says to try the headset’s USB Speakers device, check its volume and the application volume in the mixer, then restart SteamVR from the Steam library. Device names depend on the headset; do not select a name you cannot identify. Valve notes USB audio may add latency and recommends HDMI audio where possible. See Valve’s SteamVR sound troubleshooting.
When the symptom persists
Record the headset model, connection mode, whether playback or microphone fails, and which device is selected. Test one known-good app or approved accessory, then use the manufacturer’s support channel. Avoid a factory reset unless the vendor directs it for this exact symptom and explains the data consequences.
