How to connect Bluetooth headphones
Before you start
Informational: Meta lists Bluetooth headphones among the compatible Bluetooth accessories for Quest, but it warns that a Bluetooth audio device may introduce delayed audio. Meta specifically points to products made for Quest as an alternative; it does not promise identical behavior for every headphone model. Keep the headphones close to the headset, charged, and disconnected from another device while pairing.
These steps are for pairing to the headset itself. Decision point: if you are playing standalone Quest games, continue below and pair to Quest. If you are playing PC VR through Link, Air Link, Steam Link, or another desktop path, pair the headphones to the computer instead; Windows treats headphones as a Bluetooth device and uses its own Bluetooth and audio-output menus. Follow Microsoft's Windows pairing steps, then select the headphones as the PC's output in the VR app or Windows sound controls. Do not pair the same headphones to both hosts while diagnosing a connection.
Pair the headphones with Meta Quest
- Put the headphones in pairing mode. Use the headphone maker's instructions. Usually this means holding a Bluetooth or power button until the status light or voice prompt indicates pairing; the exact signal varies by model.
- Put on the headset and press the Meta button (or Oculus button on older controller layouts) on the right controller to open the Navigator.
- Select Quick controls, then Bluetooth to open Bluetooth settings. Meta's wording and icon placement may change with headset software updates.
- Select the Bluetooth toggle to turn it on. Wait for the headphone name to appear, then select Connect. These menu steps follow Meta's official Quest instructions.
- Play a short clip at a comfortable volume and check that both sides work before starting an active game. Keep the headphones secure enough that they cannot fall into your play area.
Audio and compatibility notes
Informational: Meta says compatible Low Energy (LE) Audio accessories may offer battery benefits. After pairing, open Bluetooth settings, select the arrow next to the device, and enable LE Audio only if Quest identifies it as compatible. Meta says a few seconds of silence can occur when enabling it, and immersive games may briefly reconfigure audio for low latency; the headphones should reconnect within a couple of seconds. If only one earbud plays, Meta advises turning LE Audio off and back on for that accessory.
If wireless timing is distracting, Meta's separate headphone guidance documents wired alternatives on supported Quest models. For example, Meta Quest 3 supports 3.5 mm headphones and certain USB-C headphones or adapters; Meta notes that USB-C headphones do not work when its Elite Strap with Battery is plugged in. Check the guidance for your exact model rather than assuming another headset has the same ports.
If the headphones do not appear
Diagnosis, not repair: Start with reversible checks. Do not open the headset or headphones, remove batteries, bypass safety features, or factory-reset the headset just for a pairing problem.
- Confirm the headphones are genuinely in pairing mode, not merely powered on. Move them close to Quest and turn off Bluetooth on a nearby phone, tablet, or computer that may reconnect first. If you meant to use PC VR, stop here and use the computer branch above rather than expecting Quest's scan to find a computer-paired accessory.
- Turn Quest Bluetooth off and on, then repeat the scan. If the device is already listed but disconnected, select it again; if the headphones offer a manufacturer reset, use only that model's documented procedure.
- Restart both devices and check that each has sufficient charge. If the headphones pair but audio is late or drops out, try LE Audio off (if enabled) and test a wired option.
- If a particular model still fails, treat it as a compatibility question. Meta's documentation does not guarantee every Bluetooth headphone, so consult Meta Support and the headphone maker rather than installing unofficial firmware or apps.
