How to clean PSVR2 lenses

Short answer: turn off the PSVR2 system, disconnect the headset from your PS5, then gently wipe each lens with a clean, soft, dry cloth made specifically for cleaning lenses. Do not use water, alcohol, wipes, tissues or paper towels on the lenses. Last checked October 11, 2026.

What Sony’s guidance means

Actionable guidance: PlayStation says PSVR2 lenses should be wiped only with a soft, dry lens-cleaning cloth. It also warns that paper towels and tissues are unsuitable unless specifically intended for lens cleaning, and that leaving water droplets or dirt on the lenses can cause deterioration or degradation. This is an optics-cleaning task, not a repair: do not open the headset or try to polish out scratches.

Safety: before cleaning, disconnect the VR headset from the PlayStation 5 console and turn off the controller. Keep thinner, benzine, alcohol, insecticide, chemically treated cloths and wipes away from the headset; PlayStation lists these among products not to use. Never spray cleaner into the headset or onto a lens. PlayStation’s cleaning guide is the controlling source for the PSVR2 model.

Step-by-step

  1. Power down and disconnect. Stop the game, turn off the controller, and disconnect the headset from the PS5. Set the headset on a stable surface with the lenses facing up or protected from contact.
  2. Check the cloth. Use a clean, soft cloth specifically made for cleaning lenses. Remove visible grit from the cloth first. Do not substitute a shirt, kitchen towel, tissue, paper towel, pre-moistened wipe or cloth treated with chemicals.
  3. Wipe gently. Lightly wipe one lens at a time with the dry cloth. Use minimal pressure; the aim is to lift fingerprints and dust, not scrub the coating. Keep the cloth dry and keep fingers, hair and the cloth edge away from the other lens.
  4. Inspect under good light. Look for streaks, remaining particles, moisture or a scratch. If a mark remains after a gentle dry pass, stop rather than adding liquid or solvent. Do not scrape the lens or insert anything into the headset.
  5. Reconnect only when ready. Confirm the lenses and surrounding headset are dry and free of loose lint, then reconnect the headset gently. Store it where the lenses will not touch a surface.

Glasses and fit: prevent repeat smears

Informational note: Sony says you can keep glasses on while wearing PSVR2. That does not make contact safe, however: avoid letting spectacle lenses rub against headset lenses. Clean your glasses separately using their own manufacturer-approved method, then put the headset on carefully. Sony’s wearing and adjustment guide says to pull the scope out before putting the headset on, bring it closer to your face, and use the lens-adjustment dial; the scope is adjustable from 59 mm to 72 mm. Labels and the on-screen visibility flow can vary by system software, so follow the prompts shown on your PS5.

If the image is still blurry

Diagnosis, not repair: first repeat the low-risk checks: clean both lenses, reposition the headset, adjust the scope and lens distance, and run the PS5’s visibility adjustment. A persistent blur, scratch, crack, moisture inside the optics, unusual heat or damaged cable is not evidence that more cleaning will help. Stop using the headset if it is damaged or wet and contact PlayStation Support rather than opening it.

For PSVR2 used with the official PC adapter, Sony separately recommends a soft, dry lens-specific cloth for the headset tracking cameras and the same warning against paper products and water droplets in its PC troubleshooting guidance. Cleaning the cameras can help a tracking symptom; it does not repair scratched display lenses or solve every PC image-quality issue.
