How to adjust PSVR2 tracking
What PSVR2 tracking uses
Informational: PS VR2 uses tracking cameras on the headset to track the room and your movement; it does not use the original PlayStation Camera. Tracking needs visible, distinctive room features rather than a dark or featureless view. Sony's PC troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends looking at every part of the room during play-area setup and adding posters or pictures to plain walls. Menu wording can vary with console, app and system-software updates.
Actionable steps on PS5
- Make the space safe first. Clear furniture and trip hazards from the intended play area. Keep people, pets and fragile objects out of the space, and keep the headset cable where you will not catch it. Stop if you lose awareness of your surroundings; press the headset function button for the see-through view.
- Fix the light, not the headset. Turn on the room lights so the headset can see its surroundings. Close curtains or blinds to keep direct sunlight off the tracking cameras. Sony says you can press the function button during setup to check light levels. Avoid changing to a dim or harshly backlit room while playing.
- Clean the tracking cameras safely. Turn the headset off. Wipe the camera lenses with a soft, dry cloth made for cleaning lenses. Do not use paper towels or tissues unless they are specifically intended for lenses, and do not leave water droplets or dirt on the lenses. Do not open the headset or use liquids inside it.
- Redo the play area. From the PS5 home screen, select Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Play Area > Set Play Area. Scan the room with the headset camera, including the floor and ceiling, and set a boundary that leaves room to move safely. If the boundary appears too late, Sony provides Boundary Display Sensitivity; choose High for earlier warnings.
- Calibrate the tracking cameras. Open Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > VR headset > Tracking Camera Calibration and follow the on-screen prompts. This is a calibration step, not a repair for a damaged camera. If a game still behaves unexpectedly after resetting the area, Sony says to use Play Area > Clear Play Area Data, then select Set Play Area again.
If you use PSVR2 on a Windows PC
Compatibility note: this is a separate workflow using Sony's PS VR2 PC adapter, the PlayStation VR2 App and SteamVR—not the PS5 settings menu. In SteamVR, press the PS button to open the dashboard, select the PS VR2 icon, then choose Go to Play Area Setup for PS VR2 → Play Area. Follow the on-screen area scan. If the problem persists after resetting, Sony documents Clear Play Area Data in that menu. This is a PC-only path; do not look for it in PS5 settings. Sony also says to check connections and minimum PC requirements, close blinds or curtains, adjust the room lighting, scan every part of the room, and add visible posters or pictures to plain walls. Do not assume a PS5 menu or remedy is present in the PC app.
Diagnosis before escalation
- Tracking drops only in one room: first compare lighting, direct sunlight and visible room detail. These are low-risk, reversible checks.
- Tracking remains poor everywhere: repeat the camera cleaning, redo the play area and run the platform-specific calibration or data-delete step above. If the headset is still not tracking, use PlayStation Support or repairs; do not attempt a destructive reset, battery work or headset disassembly.
- Controllers are the problem on PC: Sony separately recommends current Bluetooth drivers, a clear line of sight to the adapter and, where possible, placing a Bluetooth adapter away from USB 3.0 interference. Those checks address controller communication, not necessarily headset-camera tracking.
