Best VR headsets for fitness
A useful workout headset is less about a headline spec and more about the app you will actually use, the room you can safely clear, and whether you want a cable-free setup. This guide compares three options with first-party app and hardware information—not hands-on testing. Last checked October 11, 2026.
How this shortlist was chosen
Each pick had to meet three checks: (1) the manufacturer or platform owner publishes the headset’s relevant specifications; (2) an official store or platform page verifies at least one named fitness experience for that system; and (3) there is a clear buyer decision, such as standalone setup versus a PS5-dependent, cabled system. We give the current US storefront prices only where an official listing showed one, and date them because retail prices and app catalogs change.
This is a practical shortlist, not a lab comparison, exhaustive market survey, or claim that one headset burns more calories. VRHow has not tested these headsets or measured workouts. We do not score comfort, calorie burn, tracking accuracy, or workout effectiveness. “Best” below means “best fit for this stated buyer,” not a universal ranking.
We keep the Quest 3S and Quest 3 separate because their optics, displays and prices differ, even though Meta’s current comparison says both access the newest apps and experiences for Quest 3 and 3S. PS VR2 is included for PS5 owners, not as a wireless alternative. We have not made separate boxing, dance, weight-loss or calorie-burn winners: the useful decision is the exact app, supported device and space it requires, not an unmeasured claim about exercise outcomes.
At a glance
| Headset | Best fit | Verified fitness route | Main trade-off | Official US price checked October 11, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 3S | Fitness-first buyers who want a lower-cost, standalone start | Meta lists LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT for Quest 3S; Meta’s fitness page also showcases fitness experiences. | Fresnel lenses and lower per-eye resolution than Quest 3; confirm the fit and image suit you before prioritizing the saving. | $349.99 for 128 GB; $449.99 for 256 GB. |
| Meta Quest 3 | People who want fitness plus a display/optics upgrade for broader VR use | The same Meta BODYCOMBAT listing includes Quest 3 and Quest 3S; Meta says both can play the newest apps and experiences exclusive to Quest 3 and 3S, but check support title by title. | Higher official US price; the visual upgrade does not make it a different workout system for that verified app. | $599.99 for 512 GB. |
| PlayStation VR2 | Existing PS5 owners who want a console-based fitness title | The PlayStation Store lists LES MILLS XR BODYCOMBAT for PS5 and requires PS VR2 and Sense controllers. | Needs a PS5 and connects with one USB-C cable; the cited game requires a 2 m × 2 m room-scale area. | Not listed here: check your regional PlayStation Store for today’s price. |
Meta prices above were displayed on its US store for the configurations shown; they are not India or worldwide prices and may change with sales, tax, availability or region. The same US Meta comparison page listed the Quest 3S 128 GB and 256 GB models and Quest 3 512 GB model at those amounts when checked. Check Meta’s live comparison before purchase.
1. Meta Quest 3S: the workout-first starting point
Choose it if: workouts are the main reason you want VR, you prefer not to route a cable to a console, and the lower current US price matters more than the Quest 3’s sharper display. Meta’s comparison lists the 128 GB Quest 3S at $349.99 and the 256 GB version at $449.99 in its US store as of the date above. Those are configurations and prices, not a guarantee of local stock.
The reason it earns the default recommendation is specific, not a claim that it is objectively the most comfortable: Meta’s official LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT store listing explicitly includes Quest 3S as a supported platform. The listing describes a standing fitness app and shows no subscription; when checked, Meta’s US listing showed $29.99, with add-on content sold separately. Prices and offers can change, and the page may differ in another country.
The compromise is the view. Meta lists 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye, Fresnel optics and three-position lens-spacing adjustment for Quest 3S. That is lower resolution and a different lens system from Quest 3. These are specifications—not proof that every user will find one more comfortable. If you can, try the fit; if you wear glasses, check the selected model’s spacer and fitting guidance (Meta lists a glasses spacer in the Quest 3S box) and the app’s fit/safety directions before a long session.
Decision: for a workout-only purchase, start here if the headset fits, you can see clearly through its lens settings, and the app you want lists it. If any one of those checks fails, do not buy it just because it is the cheapest option.
2. Meta Quest 3: pay for the optics when you will use them
Choose it if: you expect fitness to be one part of regular VR use, or you already know you want the higher-resolution image and finer lens-spacing adjustment. Meta lists Quest 3 at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye with pancake optics and continuous lens-spacing adjustment; its comparison also lists a wider field of view than Quest 3S. The source and live US price are Meta’s official Quest comparison.
Quest 3 is not the automatic fitness upgrade. The official BODYCOMBAT page supports Quest 3 as well as Quest 3S, so for this named app the workout itself is not a reason to pay more for the headset. The extra spend buys different display/optics and a different storage configuration in Meta’s current US store lineup; whether that matters depends on your other uses and how the headset fits your face.
Meta’s comparison gives general-use battery estimates of 2.5 hours for Quest 3S and 2.2 hours for Quest 3, and notes that battery life depends on settings, use, battery age and wireless conditions. Treat those as manufacturer averages—not a promise for an intense workout or a fitness-session test. If you need longer sessions, plan a charging break rather than assuming a specific runtime.
Decision: choose Quest 3 for the visual upgrade and wider non-fitness use; do not choose it solely because you expect it to improve workout results. The app listing, not the headset’s price or display, establishes whether a title is compatible.
3. PlayStation VR2: for a PS5 you already own
Choose it if: your PS5 is already part of the setup, you want a console storefront, and the cable and room requirements suit your exercise space. Sony specifies an OLED display at 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, 90/120 Hz refresh rates and a single USB-C connection to PS5. The headset works with PS5—not PS4—according to Sony’s PS VR2 technical specifications and FAQ.
There is a verified fitness option: the PlayStation Store listing for LES MILLS XR BODYCOMBAT says PS VR2 and its Sense controllers are required and specifies a 2 m × 2 m play area for room-scale play. That is the requirement for this title’s PS VR2 version, not a universal minimum for every PS VR2 game. A cabled headset is a meaningful practical trade-off for free-moving workouts; route the cable so it is not in your movement path, and follow the game’s setup prompts.
Decision: PS VR2 makes most sense when you already own the required PS5 and prefer this console route. If buying both a console and headset mainly to exercise, compare the full setup cost and space needs with a standalone Quest first. No PS VR2 price is quoted here because the live price varies by country and retailer.
Check the app before you choose the headset
Start with the workout you actually want—not a broad promise that a platform has “lots of fitness.” Meta’s official Quest Fitness & Wellness page currently showcases FitXR and titles including Just Dance VR and The Thrill of the Fight. For a purchase decision, follow through to the individual app listing and confirm its supported headset, play mode, age/comfort information, regional availability and any ongoing fee. A category page is not a substitute for a title’s compatibility notes.
For one concrete example, Meta’s BODYCOMBAT listing names Quest 3S and Quest 3. It describes standing play, says internet is not required, and showed a one-time $29.99 US price with no subscription when checked; separately sold add-ons are listed on the same store page. The PlayStation listing is a different product entry and calls out the PS5, PS VR2 Sense controllers and room-scale area. Do not assume a game license, save, add-on or subscription transfers between stores.
- Pick one likely app. Open its official store page for your country and read the supported devices, controller requirements, play mode and current price.
- Check the kind of movement. A standing title and a room-scale title make different demands on your space. Use the exact experience’s required or recommended mode; do not infer a room size from the headset alone.
- Check recurring cost and offline needs. Distinguish a one-time purchase from a subscription or separately priced add-ons. Store details can change, so verify again on the day you buy.
- Only then choose hardware. If your must-have app is not listed for a headset in your region, treat it as unsupported for your decision unless its publisher confirms otherwise.
Space, fit and sweat: the practical checks
Clear more than the center of the room. Meta’s Quest 3 safety guidance recommends indoor use, removing nearby objects, leaving a buffer around the activity area, setting a boundary for movement-based play and watching for overhead hazards such as fans and light fixtures. Meta says room-scale play requires a larger space and recommends about 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft (roughly 2 m × 2 m) or more for that mode. The PS Store separately specifies 2 m × 2 m for the cited BODYCOMBAT PS VR2 version. Use the stricter instruction for your particular app and leave room outside its stated minimum where possible.
Check fit instead of guessing from grams. A face seal, head shape, strap position, glasses and how much the headset moves during your chosen exercise all affect whether it is usable for you. We have not tested either Quest model or PS VR2 on users, so this guide does not call one the most comfortable. Try the exact headset if possible and adjust it before moving quickly; if you cannot keep a clear view or stable fit, pause and re-fit rather than continuing.
Clean Quest components as Meta directs. Meta’s care article says to wipe the headset and controllers with a dry microfiber cloth after use. For removable facial interfaces, straps, headpads and silicone covers it describes hand-washing the removed component with cool water and mild liquid detergent, rinsing and air-drying fully before reinstallation. Meta says not to use alcohol or chemical cleansers and to avoid getting moisture on the device. These are Meta instructions for Quest components; check Sony’s guidance for PS VR2 rather than applying them to another brand.
Take breaks. Meta’s safety guidance says to take regular breaks, read on-screen warnings, and keep people and pets out of the play area. A headset boundary may not detect every hazard. VRHow does not provide medical advice or promise a fitness outcome; use the app’s comfort information and stop if you feel unwell.
Bottom line: make this choice
- Mainly fitness, lowest current official US entry price: start with Quest 3S, then verify your app, fit and regional price.
- Fitness plus regular VR, and you want better display/optics: consider Quest 3; the premium is for the visual and storage configuration, not a verified fitness advantage.
- You already have a PS5 and accept a cable: consider PS VR2, checking the exact workout’s area and controller requirements.
- You cannot confirm your preferred app or make a clear space: wait to buy; the headset alone cannot resolve either problem.
Questions
Which VR headset should I buy mainly for fitness?
Start with Quest 3S if the lower official US store price and a standalone setup matter most, provided it fits and supports your chosen app. Pick Quest 3 if the higher-resolution display and pancake optics are worth the additional cost for your other VR use. Pick PS VR2 only if you have a PS5 and accept the cable and title-specific space requirements.
Is Quest 3S compatible with the same fitness app as Quest 3?
Meta’s official LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT listing includes both Quest 3S and Quest 3. That verifies this app, not every app; check each title’s current store listing and regional availability.
How much room do VR workouts need?
There is no universal minimum across apps. Meta recommends a clear buffer for Quest activity and larger spaces for room-scale play. The PlayStation Store listing for LES MILLS XR BODYCOMBAT specifies 2 m × 2 m for its PS VR2 version. Follow the current guidance for the exact title and leave a clear margin around the play area.
Does PS VR2 work without a PS5?
Sony’s PS VR2 FAQ says it works with PS5 consoles and not PS4. The verified PlayStation Store BODYCOMBAT listing is for PS5 and requires PS VR2 and its Sense controllers. It is not a standalone headset.
How should I clean a Quest after a workout?
Meta says to wipe the headset and controllers with a dry microfiber cloth after use. Its instructions allow certain removable components to be hand-washed in cool water with mild liquid detergent and air-dried fully, while warning against alcohol, chemical cleansers and moisture on the device. Read the full instructions for the exact component.
Does this guide rank headsets by calories burned?
No. We have not measured workouts or tested calorie estimates. The recommendations are based on verified app compatibility, published hardware facts, setup dependencies and stated buyer needs—not a calorie-burn or effectiveness ranking.
