itch.io for VR games: finding and installing indie VR
How to find VR projects
Start with itch.io's Virtual Reality (VR) games page. It lets you sort by popularity, new and popular, top sellers, ratings or newest. Filters include price, downloadable games and operating-system/platform labels such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and browser play. These labels help narrow a large independent catalog, but they do not tell you on their own whether a build targets a particular headset or VR runtime. [1]
Creators control their project pages and can upload a range of project types for different platforms. That flexibility is valuable for prototypes, game-jam projects and unusual experiments, but it also means installation instructions and support details vary by creator. Check the individual page for the headset model, PC requirements, runtime, controller support and whether the download is a PC build, Android package or browser experience. [2]
Downloading and managing games
You can download a project's files from its itch.io page. The optional itch desktop app is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. itch says the app keeps downloads in one place, gives access to purchases and collections, and automatically updates installed games. It can also sync browser-based games for offline play. [3]
The desktop app manages files and downloads; it is not a headset compatibility layer. A PC VR title still needs to explicitly support your headset and the runtime or launch method described by its creator. Do not assume that a game tagged VR will run natively on a Quest, Apple Vision Pro or another standalone headset.
What to check before you download
- Target device: Look for the exact headset or PC VR setup named by the developer, not just the VR tag. [1]
- Build format: Confirm whether the page offers a Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, browser or other build, and follow that project's install notes. itch.io says creators upload their project files for the platforms they choose. [2]
- Project status: Read the latest developer notes for demos, prototypes, updates and known issues; project pages are creator-controlled. [2]
- Price: Pricing is set at the project level. itch.io's creator FAQ says creators can set a minimum price, including zero, and let buyers choose whether to pay more. [2]
Common questions
Is itch.io a dedicated VR headset store?
No. It is a general indie-game and software platform with VR-tagged projects. The VR tag helps with discovery, while device and runtime support must be checked on each project's page. [1] [2]
Can I install itch.io games directly on Meta Quest?
Only when the creator supplies a compatible Quest or Android build and explains how to install it. A Windows VR download is not a Quest-native app. The platform's broad creator-upload model does not guarantee any one headset build. [2]
Do I need the itch app?
No. You can download files from project pages in a browser. The desktop app is an optional library and download manager for Windows, macOS and Linux. [3]
