Android XR: Google Play apps and compatibility
What users will find in Google Play
| App experience | What it means on XR | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible Android app | Many existing mobile or large-screen apps can run as 2D panels in an XR environment without a full spatial redesign. | “Compatible” does not mean purpose-built for XR. Check device availability and whether the app's needed features work in the headset. |
| Made for XR | Google Play uses this badge for apps that Google Help describes as designed for an optimized XR experience. | Use the badge as a discovery signal, then read the product details, reviews and input requirements. |
| XR-native or immersive title | Apps built specifically for an XR headset can use spatial or immersive features; availability is restricted to devices that meet the app's declared requirements. | Confirm the specific headset appears as compatible in Play. Platform support alone does not guarantee an individual app is available. |
Install, browse and check reviews
Google's Android XR help guide describes opening Google Play on the headset, searching or browsing categories and selecting Install or the listed price. Google also says users can install XR content remotely using a phone or computer. On an app's ratings and reviews, the XR headset tab lets signed-in users see reviews specific to the XR experience. The Made for XR badge is the quickest official marker that Google says an app is designed for an optimized XR experience.
Compatibility is device-specific
Android XR is a platform for multiple XR form factors, not one headset or one catalog guarantee. Google's developer overview says most Android apps are compatible with XR headsets and wired XR glasses, usually appearing as 2D apps in space. Specific apps can still be unavailable because of unsupported features, app configuration or device targeting. Check the Google Play listing on the intended device and treat a compatible mobile app as a basic starting point—not proof of spatial design, controller support or immersive features.
Market note checked October 11, 2026: the Android XR Help page currently says Google's XR headset can be purchased only in South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. That statement is about the headset purchase markets named on that help page; it is not a complete statement of every Android XR device launch or every app's geographic availability.
For developers: two Google Play release tracks
| Release path | When it fits | Visibility / trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile release track | An existing mobile app, including apps that add XR features while retaining a shared app package. | Google says existing mobile-track apps are automatically discoverable on Google Play for Android XR users if they do not include unsupported XR features. XR-specific manifest configuration may be needed when adding spatial features. |
| Dedicated Android XR release track | A new XR-only app, or a markedly different XR variant with its own permissions or functionality. | The app must declare the relevant spatial or OpenXR manifest feature. It is shown only to Android XR devices that support the declared feature. Separate artifacts add release and maintenance work. |
Google's distribution guide says to choose the track based on whether the app is a compatible mobile experience, an existing app with spatial features, or a new XR-focused app. Use the Play Console device catalog to review compatibility after uploading an app bundle; Google notes that not-yet-launched devices might not appear until closer to launch.
Questions
Does every Google Play Android app run on an Android XR headset?
No. Google says most apps are compatible, but apps that depend on unsupported features or are filtered by device targeting may not be available or fully functional. Verify the app against the exact headset.
What does “Made for XR” mean?
Google's Android XR Help says apps with that badge are designed for an optimized XR experience. It is a useful discovery signal, not a replacement for checking the app's feature list, headset support and reviews.
Can I install an XR app from my phone?
Google says apps and content for an XR headset can be downloaded with the headset, a phone or a computer. The account, region, device compatibility and app listing still determine whether that title can be installed.
Can a developer publish one app for both mobile and XR?
Google supports continuing on the mobile release track for compatible apps, including some apps with XR functionality, or using a dedicated Android XR track when the XR experience differs substantially. Each route has manifest and compatibility requirements.
