SteamVR updates: latest verified status
Dated evidence
- October 10, 2026 — SteamVR Beta 2.18.3 (confirmed beta-only). Valve’s announcement labels this a beta update and says anyone can opt in. It fixes saving new bindings when an application has no default set, prevents two Linux/OpenXR crash cases, and improves Steam Link behavior on some AMD GPUs and older Linux graphics drivers. Its Steam Frame controller change requires both Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta. These are test-branch changes; they should not be described as stable SteamVR availability. Valve, “SteamVR Beta Updated - 2.18.3” (October 10, 2026).
- September 23–October 1, 2026 — 2.18 beta iteration (confirmed beta stream). Valve’s 2.18.1 notes add the Aurora default environment, gamepad navigation, tethered Quest support over USB (with Steam Link Beta), and Linux compatibility fixes; 2.18.2 adds streaming reliability fixes, including “Error 17” work, and controller-binding fixes. The notes identify both as beta updates, so they show active development rather than a stable rollout. Valve, “SteamVR Beta Updated - 2.18.1” (September 23, 2026) and Valve, “SteamVR Beta Updated - 2.18.2” (October 1, 2026).
- September 10, 2026 — SteamVR 2.17 (confirmed stable major update). Valve posted 2.17 as a “Major Update.” It brings Steam achievements, community guides and notes into VR; adds a Steam Deck-style Quick Access Menu to the VR Dashboard; improves overlay controls and brightness settings; improves Steam Link streaming, including initial USB streaming support that requires Steam Client Beta; and adds 32-bit OpenXR application support. Valve also documents Linux stability and wired-headset improvements. Valve, “Introducing SteamVR 2.17” (September 10, 2026).
What this means for PC VR users
For a normal installation, treat 2.17 as the latest stable major release verified here. The 2.18 line is useful for testers and developers tracking dashboard, streaming, OpenXR and Linux changes, but Valve’s own labels mean beta features can change before—or never reach—a general release. SteamVR remains available as free software from Valve for the Index, Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality and other supported PC VR headsets. Verification gap: Valve’s announcement hub exposed beta builds through October 10, 2026, but this check did not find a later dated stable release than 2.17. We therefore do not claim that 2.18 is generally available, and we do not infer an unannounced 2.18 stable date or feature set. This page is a verified snapshot, not a complete history of every patch.
