Major VR developer announcements: what is actually confirmed
Dated evidence
- September 24, 2026 — Meta VR Glasses developer tools available; hardware still future. Meta says the v207 SDKs are available immediately even though the glasses will not ship until spring 2027. The device uses the Quest operating system, Store, and SDKs; Meta also documents a VR Glasses profile in Meta XR Simulator and gaze-interaction tooling. This is actionable for prototyping and testing, not evidence consumers can buy the headset or that every feature is final. Meta Developers, “VR is Expanding. Start Building for Meta VR Glasses Today” (September 24, 2026).
- September 24–November 18, 2026 — Meta Start Developer Competition. Meta says the second competition offers $1 million in total prizes and accepts new or significantly updated experiences for Quest, VR Glasses, or both. It is an open program with a stated end date as of this check; prize money is not guaranteed to an applicant, and the published terms should be read before committing development time. Meta Developers, “Meta VR Start Developer Competition, Reach Further, Win Bigger” (September 24, 2026).
- February 19, 2026 — Meta separates Quest VR from its Worlds mobile strategy. Meta said it would focus Horizon Worlds almost exclusively on mobile while “doubling down” on the VR developer ecosystem. It reported nearly $150 million invested in VR developer programs in 2025 and announced new Quest monetization and discovery tools. Those are Meta’s own strategy and investment claims, not an independent estimate of headset sales or developer income. Meta Developers, “Our Renewed Focus in 2026” (February 19, 2026).
- November 12, 2025 announcement; September 14, 2026 retail launch reported — Valve Steam Frame. Valve’s first-party post said the hardware was expected to begin shipping in early 2026. GeekWire later reported a September 14 launch, a $1,059 256GB / $1,299 1TB price, and a signup lottery for the first batch. Valve’s accessible product page did not expose current stock or checkout terms during this check. Treat developer-kit access, current shipping, and any platform-specific support as questions to verify directly; the retail report alone does not answer them. Valve, “Announcing new Steam Hardware, coming in 2026!” (November 12, 2025); GeekWire, Steam Frame launch report (September 14, 2026).
Developer implications
For teams already using Meta’s stack, the concrete near-term action is to test the v207 SDK and simulator profile now, then design eye-and-hand input so it degrades gracefully on controller-first Quest devices. Avoid locking a release plan to Meta VR Glasses until the shipping hardware, performance profile, and final requirements are published. The competition dates may help a project plan, but eligibility and judging—not the headline prize pool—determine whether it is a practical funding route.
For Steam developers, the official early-2026 shipping target has already passed, and a September media report says a retail launch occurred. That does not prove current stock, market-wide access, or which existing applications run well. Validate storefront availability and test requirements using Valve’s current developer documentation before promising support to customers.
Platform strategy also affects discovery: Meta’s own account of its move toward mobile Worlds means a Quest VR launch should be evaluated on the VR Store, user acquisition, monetization, and publisher support—not assumed to receive the same distribution as mobile Worlds.

Verification limits: This is a researched snapshot, not a complete industry roundup. Meta’s cited SDK and contest details come from primary developer posts. Steam Frame’s later retail date and pricing are attributed to GeekWire; current Valve stock, developer-kit distribution, and shipping terms were not independently verified in a readable first-party order flow. We did not infer support from leaks or older roadmaps.
