How to set up Meta Quest 3S
Before you put it on
Action: use the power adapter and charging cable supplied in the box to fully charge the headset first, as Meta recommends. Remove the paper from the strap and carefully remove both lens films. Do not use the headset with a film covering either lens.
Safety: choose an indoor area and clear objects you could hit before wearing the headset. Meta says to charge indoors and recommends a clear buffer around you. A room-scale experience needs at least 7 by 7 feet (2 by 2 metres), while seated or standing apps need at least 3 feet (1 metre) of free room in all directions; an individual app may need more. These are space recommendations, not a guarantee that every room is safe.
Set up the headset and controllers
- Start the headset. Hold the power button on the left side for about three seconds, until you hear a chime and see the Meta symbol.
- Prepare the controllers. Gently pull the paper battery blocker from each controller. Put on both adjustable wrist straps before use. Hold the left controller's Menu button and the right controller's Meta button for about two seconds. A blinking white light and haptic response indicate they are ready.
- Follow the in-headset tutorial. Choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, adjust the strap and lens setting until the image is clear, and complete any software update the headset presents. Menu wording can change with software versions, so use the on-screen labels if they differ.
- Fit it safely. Tighten the split back strap enough to keep the headset stable without pain or pressure. If you wear glasses, install the glasses spacer supplied with the headset; do not force glasses against the lenses. Stop if you feel pain, eye strain or nausea.
Pair the Meta Horizon mobile app
- Install the Meta Horizon mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, then open it and log in or create a Meta account.
- If this is your first Quest setup, follow the app's setup prompts. If you already use Quest, open the app, tap Menu, tap Devices, tap Connect new device, choose Meta Quest 3S, and follow the prompts.
- Keep the phone and headset nearby while pairing. The app is needed for initial pairing and setup, but Meta says you do not need to use it every time you use the headset.
Informational note: app availability, account screens and menu labels can vary by phone, region and headset software. Treat Meta's current instructions as the authority if a label differs.
Make the first play space safe
Action: when prompted, create or confirm the boundary around the cleared area. Stand near the centre while drawing it and look around the room so the boundary matches the actual clear space; Meta's boundary instructions describe the current menu path if you need to redraw it later. Virtual walls are intended to warn you as you approach the edge, not to replace physical clearance or supervision. In mixed reality, remove hazards such as liquids, heat sources and sharp objects unless the experience specifically needs a safe physical object.
Care: keep the headset out of direct sunlight and extremely hot places, such as a car or near a heat source. Clean lenses only with a dry optical microfiber cloth; Meta specifically says to avoid liquid and chemical cleaners. Never look at the sun through the lenses.
If pairing does not work
Diagnosis first: note which symptom you see—no pairing code, a rejected code, “headset is already paired,” or “no available headsets found.” These are separate cases in Meta's pairing troubleshooting guide; choose the matching section rather than guessing at a reset. First confirm the app is signed into the intended account, the headset is powered on, and both devices are close by, then retry the on-screen pairing flow. Advice: leave a factory reset until the issue-specific checks and Meta Support's instructions are exhausted—it is irreversible and erases the account information, downloaded games and content on the headset, according to Meta's factory-reset guidance.
