Samsung Galaxy XR: announcement and availability history
December 12, 2024 — Android XR and Project Moohan announced
Google announced Android XR in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google said the first headset, then codenamed Project Moohan and built by Samsung, “will be available for purchase next year.” That was a platform and upcoming-device announcement, not yet an announcement of a retail product named Galaxy XR. Google’s Android XR announcement is the primary record for this stage.
May 2025 — Project Moohan previewed
Google’s I/O roundup described “the first Android XR device coming later this year” as Samsung’s Project Moohan and showed a preview of the headset. The wording established an expected 2025 window, but still used the project codename rather than the Galaxy XR retail name and did not establish retail availability. Google’s I/O 2025 announcements records that preview.
October 21–22, 2025 — Galaxy XR formally introduced
Samsung’s U.S. newsroom dated its announcement October 21, 2025 and said Samsung had unveiled Galaxy XR as the first product built on Android XR, developed together by Samsung, Google and Qualcomm Technologies. Samsung’s global newsroom dates the Korean release notice October 22, 2025 and gives the same product and partnership history. Qualcomm’s product coverage also identifies Galaxy XR and its Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. These records confirm the product’s existence and separate the formal product announcement from the earlier Project Moohan previews.
Confirmed launch availability
United States: Samsung’s U.S. announcement says Galaxy XR was available from 10 p.m. ET on October 21, 2025 through Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores, priced at $1,799.99. Google’s launch article likewise says it was available “starting today” through Samsung.com and Samsung Experience stores in the U.S. and Korea.
South Korea: Samsung’s global newsroom states that Galaxy XR would be available starting October 22, 2025 in Korea. Google’s launch article confirms Samsung Experience store availability in Korea.
United Kingdom: Samsung’s UK newsroom announced that Galaxy XR became available there on July 10, 2026, at £1,699 RRP, extending the rollout beyond the 2025 launch markets. This is a later availability milestone, not a change to the original 2025 launch record.
Other regions and evidence scope: The primary records cited here establish availability in the United States, South Korea and the United Kingdom, but do not establish a complete global distribution list. Samsung’s 2025 Canadian newsroom said Galaxy XR was not available in Canada at launch; that is a dated launch-period statement, not evidence of its later status.
What is verified, and what is not
The product, October 2025 announcement, and three availability milestones above are verified by company records. “First Android XR headset” is Google’s wording for Galaxy XR; this page does not broaden that into a claim that it was the first XR headset generally. The cited primary sources do not provide a complete worldwide availability list.
