PICO Space Pro / Project Swan: status, specs and compatibility

Short answer: PICO Space Pro is a real, officially documented future XR headset rather than an unverified rumor. PICO says it will launch globally in 2026, but has not announced a specific release date or retail availability. “Project Swan” is the name used in earlier reporting for this same tracked device; PICO’s current developer documentation calls it PICO Space Pro. Last checked October 11, 2026.

What is verified?

PICO’s own developer site has a dedicated Space Pro device entry and a separate FAQ titled “PICO Space Pro & PICO OS 6.” That documentation is enough to establish Space Pro as an announced PICO platform device. It describes a standalone mixed-reality headset intended for spatial-computing development, although PICO’s FAQ says the exact hardware release date has not yet been announced. PICO says developers can use its SDKs and emulator while it recruits participants for a Global Early Access Program.

The codename needs a caveat. PICO’s current device page does not call the product Project Swan. Road to VR reports that Space Pro was previously known as “Project Swan” and cites the product’s FCC appearance. This page therefore groups the names for discoverability, but does not treat leaked renders, rumored prices or pre-announcement reports as official specifications.

Confirmed information

ItemWhat the sources establish
Product identityPICO Space Pro; earlier specialist reporting identifies “Project Swan” as its former codename.
CategoryStandalone XR / mixed-reality headset and PICO’s next-generation spatial-computing platform.
Launch statusPICO says global launch in 2026, but no specific hardware release date has been announced.
DisplayCustom MicroOLED system; dual-eye 4K-level visual output; target 4,000 PPI, average 40 PPD and more than 45 PPD in the central visual area.
ComputeDual-chip architecture: a self-developed XR chip plus a flagship-level SoC. PICO describes CPU and GPU performance as more than twice XR2 Gen 2, but does not name the SoC.
Mixed realityMulti-sensor perception and imaging fusion, video see-through and spatial positioning; PICO quotes 12 ms end-to-end system latency.
Tracking and inputEye tracking, hand tracking, gaze-pinch, PICO XR controllers, PICO Motion Trackers, and wired or wireless keyboards, mice and game controllers are documented for PICO OS 6.
SoftwarePICO OS 6. PICO lists PICO Spatial SDK, OpenXR Native, WebXR, WebSpatial, and PICO Unity/Unreal SDK support for Space Pro development.

Several everyday buying details remain undisclosed by PICO: refresh rate, field of view, RAM, storage, Wi-Fi, battery, controller specifications, camera count and camera resolution. There is no official price or confirmed consumer sales region in the sources used here. Do not substitute Pico 4 Enterprise, Pico 4 Ultra or another Pico device’s specifications.

Availability and the launch-date conflict

The strongest availability statement is PICO’s own FAQ: global launch is planned for 2026, while the specific release date has not been announced; the current early-access program is for internal testing and developer cooperation, not ordinary retail sales. A September 1, 2026 FCC record identifies a “Mixed Reality Computer” (model AA1Z0) associated with PICO/ByteDance contacts, which is evidence of a certified radio device, not proof that a consumer headset is shipping.

Road to VR reported on September 8 that a planned September reveal had been cancelled and that PICO was then saying to expect launch in Q4 2026. That is more specific than PICO’s public FAQ, so it is shown as a reported expectation rather than a confirmed date. Until PICO publishes a release announcement, Space Pro should be treated as announced and in early access—not as currently available to buy.

Compatibility: what developers can rely on

PICO documents OpenXR and WebXR support alongside native development through its Spatial SDK. Its PICO OS 6 overview says traditional OpenXR and WebXR applications can coexist with native Kotlin-based Spatial SDK applications, and describes both Shared Space multitasking and Full Space immersive modes. The FAQ also says existing Android applications can run directly on PICO OS 6, with options to port them to 3D or multi-app modes. These are platform claims, not a promise that every existing VR application will work unchanged; the SDK, permissions and target runtime still matter.

Questions

Is Project Swan a separate headset from PICO Space Pro?

PICO’s current official pages use the Space Pro name. Road to VR reports that Space Pro was previously known as Project Swan, and the official FAQ title also pairs the terms. That supports treating them as the same tracked program, but this page labels the codename as reported rather than claiming PICO published a formal renaming statement.

Can I buy PICO Space Pro now?

Not on the evidence here. PICO says the release date is not announced and describes early access, SDKs and an emulator. A planned reveal was reported as cancelled. No retail price or shipping date is confirmed.

Is it a Pico 4 Enterprise successor?

Do not assume that. Space Pro is documented as a separate next-generation PICO OS 6 platform. This page does not merge its unknown specifications with Pico 4 Enterprise or Pico 4 Ultra.
