Best VR horror games
Selection method: each title is included because an official publisher, developer, or storefront page describes it as horror or survival horror and identifies a current VR version. Labels distinguish Meta Quest store editions, Windows PC VR editions and PlayStation VR2 console editions; they do not assume one connection method works with every headset.
Recommended horror games
- Resident Evil 4 (Quest VR) — Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S; Meta Quest store edition. Meta describes this as a version entirely remastered for VR, with first-person VR interactions, and lists it as a single-user Quest game. It fits for a campaign-based survival-horror experience with shooting, exploration, and puzzles.
- Resident Evil Village VR Mode — PlayStation VR2 on PlayStation 5; console VR. Capcom says the VR Mode is free DLC for the PS5 version and that the entirety of Resident Evil Village can be played with PlayStation VR2. The full game is required for the complete VR mode; Capcom also documents a separate demo. It fits for a full-length survival-horror story built around first-person VR weapons and interactions.
- MADiSON VR — Windows PC VR via Steam. The official Steam listing marks it “VR Only,” describes psychological horror, and lists tracked-controller support plus Vive, Index, Pico 4, and Meta Quest controllers and headsets in its requirements. It fits for players seeking a single-player psychological-horror story with camera-based puzzles and environmental interaction.
- Propagation: Paradise Hotel — Windows PC VR via Steam. WanadevStudio’s Steam page calls it a single-player VR survival-horror game and documents Meta Quest, Oculus Rift/S, Valve Index, HTC Vive, Pico, and Windows Mixed Reality support for the PC version. It fits for resource gathering, stealth, puzzles, and survival encounters in a zombie-filled hotel.
- Phasmophobia — Windows PC VR via Steam; OpenXR listed for VR. Kinetic Games describes a four-player online co-op psychological-horror game, while the official Steam listing marks it “VR Supported” and lists OpenXR in the minimum VR requirements. It fits for cooperative ghost investigations. This entry describes the cited Steam edition; check the headset maker’s current PC VR guidance for any headset-to-PC setup.
- Alien: Rogue Incursion — Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S; Meta Quest store edition. Survios lists separate Quest 3, PS VR2 and Steam VR versions. Meta identifies the Quest edition as a single-user action-horror VR story and names Quest 3/3S in its supported-platform field. It fits for an Alien-universe VR horror experience. - Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2 — Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S; Meta Quest store edition. Meta lists this as a Quest game and describes a VR experience with room-scale play and horror-themed Fazbear tasks and minigames. Meta describes horror-themed tasks and minigames, rather than a single continuous survival-horror campaign.
- Cosmodread — Meta Quest edition; exact headset generations are not specified by White Door Games. The publisher calls it a VR survival-horror roguelike and lists separate Meta Quest, Steam VR, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR2 versions. It fits for replayable exploration, resource scarcity, crafting, and procedurally generated spaceship layouts.
Demos, DLC, bundles and platform-specific offers can differ. Use each linked store page for current purchase conditions and included content; this guide does not compare price or editions.
Choose a horror style, not just a platform
“Horror” covers different play loops. The Resident Evil entries lean on survival combat and resource decisions; Phasmophobia is built around investigating paranormal activity with other players; MADiSON VR and Propagation: Paradise Hotel are Windows PC VR editions; Cosmodread and Resident Evil 4 are Meta Quest store editions. These are editorial descriptions of the linked official listings, not a universal scale of fear or intensity.
The version matters as much as the game name. This page’s Resident Evil 4 entry is the Meta Quest store version; Resident Evil Village VR Mode is a separate PS5/PSVR2 recommendation tied to the full game. MADiSON VR, Propagation: Paradise Hotel and Phasmophobia are separate Steam editions; their individual listings provide the Windows requirements and VR-support details. No particular headset connection path is asserted.
Comfort and content checks before starting
- Read the current regional age/content label. Store ratings and descriptors vary by region and platform. This page does not make a blanket suitability recommendation.
- Look at the movement and play-mode fields. Teleport, smooth movement, sitting, standing and room-scale support differ by title; use the linked listing rather than assuming horror games share the same comfort options.
- Check whether you want solo or co-op. Phasmophobia’s official listing identifies multiplayer; several other selections are single-user or story-focused. Match the game to the session you actually want.
- For PCVR and PSVR2, verify requirements first. A title’s genre says nothing about your PC’s ability to run it or which console/headset edition you own.
This is a genre guide, not a promise that a title will be frightening, comfortable or suitable for every player. No horror-intensity score or performance claim is invented.
