Meta Quest 3 vs Meta Quest 2
Specs side by side
Prices are not timeless: the Quest 3 amount is the price displayed on Meta's page when checked on October 11, 2026. Meta's Quest 2 tech-spec page still prints historical prices of $199.99 for 128 GB and $299.99 for 256 GB, while Meta's current Quest 2 product page says the headset is no longer available. Those are different claims, not a current Quest 2 offer; used or remaining-stock pricing is unverified.
What the differences mean
Image and mixed reality: Quest 3 has more per-eye pixels, documented pancake lenses, a wider listed field of view and a depth sensor. Those source-backed differences favor Quest 3 on the stated resolution, viewing-angle and room-sensing criteria; they do not prove subjective sharpness or comfort. Quest 2's lens type is unverified in the sources used here.
Performance and library: Meta's developer documentation identifies Quest 3's XR2 Gen 2 and 8 GB memory versus Quest 2's XR2 and 6 GB. The platform comparison does not promise that every app runs on both devices. Treat the broad “Quest library” as a category with exceptions: check each game's store listing for the supported headset before buying, especially for newer Quest 3-only software.
Tracking and setup: Both can track head and hands without external sensors, and both use Touch controllers. Quest 3 adds the documented depth sensor for passthrough; Quest 2's official spec page documents 6DOF and no external sensors. Both still need the Meta Horizon mobile app for setup, and Quest 2's page says a Meta account is required. Meta setup.
PC VR: This is a defined representative comparison, not a claim that all PC VR software behaves identically. Meta lists both devices for Quest Link by cable or Air Link. Its Windows Link requirements call for Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB or more RAM, one USB port for minimum cable use, and a supported GPU; the same page lists Intel i5-4590 / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or greater as the minimum processor. Check the full GPU table before assuming a PC is compatible.
Which fits whom?
- Choose Quest 3 if you want the stronger documented hardware baseline, pancake optics, wider view, depth-sensor passthrough and current Meta availability, and the dated $599.99 price is acceptable.
- Consider Quest 2 only if you find a verified used or remaining-stock unit at a price you accept and its supported software meets your needs. Meta currently marks it unavailable, so do not treat the historical $199.99/$299.99 figures as a live offer.
- For PC VR, decide from the PC requirements and the individual game's support list first: Meta lists Link/Air Link for both, so the headset choice alone does not make an under-spec Windows PC compatible.
Questions
Is Quest 3 compatible with Quest 2 games?
Not every app has the same device support. Meta's platform documentation compares device capabilities but does not provide a universal compatibility guarantee. Check the individual Meta Horizon Store listing; the blanket claim is unverified.
Can both headsets connect to a gaming PC?
Yes, for the representative Meta Quest Link path: Meta lists both Quest 3 and Quest 2 for cable or Air Link. A compatible Windows PC and current software are still required; see Meta's Link requirements.
Can I buy a new Quest 2 from Meta?
Meta's current Quest 2 product page says it is no longer available. Retailer or used prices are unverified here.
