VRHow Interactive Lab
Hands-on visual tools and interactive experiments designed to explain how virtual reality hardware and real-time graphics work. Explore headset subsystems in 3D, test optical trade-offs, and run interactive simulations covering frame timing, GPU workload, latency, foveated rendering, and display persistence.
3D Headset Studio
An interactive, procedural 3D headset teardown and optics laboratory. Rotate the model in real time, explode internal components (lenses, displays, sensors, strap, IPD dial), and test educational simulations for sweet-spot alignment, pixels per degree (PPD), frame delivery budgets, and lens distortion correction.
-
3D Component Explorer
Inspect 8 key headset subsystems with engineering trade-offs, ergonomic considerations, and care guidelines.
-
Optics Lab
4 interactive simulations demonstrating IPD offset, resolution vs. field of view, refresh timing, and lens pre-distortion.
-
Side-by-Side Comparison
Compare Quest 3 (pancake optics) and Quest 3S (Fresnel optics) across use cases with transparent source citations.
-
Guided Tours
Self-paced walkthroughs explaining headset fundamentals, visual clarity factors, and PC VR requirements.
VR Performance & Perception Lab
Five interactive, clearly labeled simulations that explain why VR feels smooth, sharp, or off. Adjust variables in real time to observe the direct physical and perceptual trade-offs behind frame timing, GPU rendering bottlenecks, end-to-end latency, foveated rendering, and display persistence.
-
Frame Timing Lab
Test why a steady frame cadence beats a good average frame rate, and observe how variability causes missed delivery deadlines.
-
GPU Resource Explorer
Adjust scene complexity, render scale, textures, shadows, and anti-aliasing to identify which settings drive GPU workload.
-
Latency Explorer
Break down application, rendering, queueing, and display stages to see how latency creates head-turn tracking error.
-
Foveated Rendering
Compare uniform vs. simulated foveation with gaze tracking to understand how detail zones save shading workload.
-
Display Persistence
Understand why moving objects smear on sample-and-hold displays and how persistence shapes motion clarity.
VR Comfort & Optics Lab
An interactive engineering reference exploring VR frame budgets, motion-to-photon latency, presentation artifacts, and near-eye optical design trade-offs with side-by-side through-the-lens comparisons.
-
Frame-Time & Comfort Lab
Simulate refresh rates from 72 to 144 Hz, oscilloscope frame pacing, periodic spike stalls, and compositor reprojection modes.
-
Through-The-Lens Optical Simulator
Compare Fresnel, pancake, and aspheric lenses across LCD, Mini-LED, and OLED displays with interactive A/B split viewing.
-
Glare & Diffraction Torch
Inspect internal reflections, Fresnel ring scatter, Mini-LED zone blooming, and subpixel screen-door effects in real time.
-
Acuity & Ergonomics Guide
Diagnostic protocols explaining vestibulo-ocular reflex coupling, mechanical IPD alignment, and low-persistence scanout.
How our lab tools work
The models and demonstrations in VRHow's Interactive Lab are built for education:
- Illustrative 3D geometry: The 3D headsets are procedural models built to demonstrate component order, optical paths, and mechanical function. They are not manufacturer CAD files.
- Deterministic simulation models: Every number and chart in the Performance Lab and Optics Lab comes from documented, deterministic mathematical models. They are educational simulations designed to illustrate system principles—not hardware benchmarks or measurements from real GPUs, displays, or headsets.
- Grounded data: Every specification shown in the studio distinguishes between manufacturer-confirmed figures (Meta), press-reported details, editorial explanations, and unverified claims.
